We finally have full-year 2024 figures for all 28 European markets. According to JATO Dynamics, 12.91 million new cars were registered last year, an increase of just 0.9 per cent compared to 2023 figures, thanks to demand for hybrid cars offsetting losses for electric, plug-in hybrid and internal combustion engine cars.

But which models performed best in 2024?

Below is the ranking by registered units and also the Top Ten best-selling electric cars.

However, a separate chapter is reserved for the cars with the highest increase in market share (the percentage of sales in relation to the total market on a year-on-year basis, but excluding models launched from Q4 2023 for a fairer comparison).

1. Dacia Sandero

In 2024, the Dacia Sandero was the most popular car in Europe. For the first time since its rebirth as a brand in 2004, Dacia placed one of its models at the top of the ranking. The Sandero's success is explained by its affordability and relatively modern design. Its registrations increased by 14% to 268,101 units.

2. Renault Clio

The Renault Clio moved up the podium during the first months of the year, changing positions and finally ending 2024 in second place thanks to 216,317 registered units, i.e. 7% more than in 2023.

3. Volkswagen Golf

The best-selling car in Europe until 2021 has finally halted its decline in sales. In 2024, the Volkswagen Golf registered  215,715 units in hatchback and estate versions. The volume increased by 17 per cent, the highest increase among the 10 best-selling models. However, the total recorded last year paled in comparison to the 445,600 and 410,300 units recorded in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

4. Tesla Model Y

The fourth most popular car in Europe in 2024 was the Tesla Model Y, with 209,214 units registered. This is a 17 per cent drop compared to 2023, but still confirms the Model Y as the best-selling BEV in the Old Continent. Meanwhile, after its debut in China, we recall that the new Tesla Model Y (codenamed Juniper) arrived in the UK in a Launch Edition version with a price of £60,900.

Models with the highest increase in market share

Finally, we would like to dedicate a separate chapter to the cars that saw their market share increase significantly in 2024. Reading the data in this way, we can see that the Jeep Avenger's volume almost doubled from 40,800 units in 2023 to 78,900 last year.

It was the third most popular SUV in Stellantis, behind only the Peugeot 2008 and Peugeot 3008. Growth was driven by combustion engine versions, up 44 per cent, and the introduction of mild-hybrid engines. The electric version increased by 25% to 15,300 units.
