'A Joke That Had Serious Consequences:' Car Salesman Posts Video on Social Media. Then He Gets Indefinitely Suspended
"He's never going to sell a car again."
If you post videos bragging about screwing people over—joking or not—you might be the one who ends up getting screwed.
There’s a certain rule people forget when they get on the internet and start talking about work: You might be funny, you might be right, and you might go viral—but you also might end up fired. That’s what seems to have happened here.
Car Salesman PSA
In a viral video with more than 126,000 views, car salesman Shauon (@shauonsellscars) explained why you need to be careful about what you post online, especially when it involves your job and customers.
Shauon explained that there are definite upsides to posting online as a car salesperson, like getting more potential customers and creating the possibility for brand deals.
“But if you don't go about it the right way, you can end up like my boy Kenny in the gutter, indefinitely suspended from his dealership,” Shauon said, referring to popular content creator @kennyselllss.
Shauon says he’s sure Kenny will easily get another job, but hopes the situation serves as a wake-up call.
“You have to be mindful of what you're putting out there because one, we live in a soft [expletive] society where everybody is sensitive and nobody wants to get offended about anything,” Shauon said. “Can't say nothing to nobody. But being salesmen, we are a representation of the company we work for. And when you work for a franchise Honda dealership or a franchise dealership in general, there's certain [expletive] that the upline is not putting up with.”
Shauon added that the easiest way to get fired is to publicly talk about how your company is screwing over customers.
Quite frankly, no customer wants to hear that. It completely destroys the trust and reputation of your establishment and you as a salesperson.
“I'm serving as a beacon, as a voice of reason to salesmen that want to go be successful posting content. Don't post [expletive] about getting over on consumers, all right? Don't post anything that can be remotely offensive to a consumer,” he added.
“You can be funny. You can be comedic in your content and not be offensive,” Shauon concluded.
What Did Kenny Do?
According to Kenny himself—who posts under the name Kenny Sells—the whole thing was a misunderstanding.
In his follow-up video, he makes it clear that his content is satire.
“I am the physical embodiment of everything that you guys hate from car salespeople,” he said.
Lying about refinancing, hiding keys, hitting on customers' wives, screwing people over—he says none of it is real. It’s all a character based on the worst stereotypes about car dealers.
“I don’t sit here and crack my customers. I don’t sit here and get at my customers' wives. … I literally just post this stuff because it’s hilarious,” he says.
Kenny says his videos aren’t instructional. They’re not even confessionals. They’re a troll.
“It’s a joke,” he says. “It’s a [expletive] troll page. I troll everything that you guys say about salespeople.”
But clearly, not everyone was in on the joke. And now, Kenny’s suspension is a reminder to anyone in sales: If your content could make your dealership look bad, it might make you unemployed.
Commenters React
“Pour one out for Kennysells,” a top comment read.
“We ain’t soft. We can’t stand car shopping as it is. Any salesperson making content about ripping people off is gonna catch heat. Kenny thought he was being funny, but, all he had to do was keep the content relevant not diabolical,” a person said.
“It has nothing to do with being soft. People are sick of being nickeled and dimed in this economy, ESPECIALLY when buying cars,” another wrote.
“With all due respect, there are a lot of shady salesmen and dealerships out there. So, even if this was a joke, [expletive] like that happens every day. There's a reason why most people hate car salesman,” a commenter added.
