Bugatti - hardly any other manufacturer defines itself as strongly through speed records as the noble French luxury brand. The W16 Mistral has just set a new record for open-top vehicles with an incredible 282 mph on the tarmac, thus creating another monument to the outgoing W16 engine. On the same occasion, all four record-breaking cars met for the first time, resulting in some fantastic pictures. Bugatti has a tradition of speed mania!

On 9 November 2024, the W16 Mistral reached a top speed of 453.91 km/h (282 mph) on the test track in Papenburg. This makes it the fastest open-top production vehicle in the world. This performance underlines the pursuit of perfection that has always characterised Bugatti.

The W16 Mistral is the last model to be equipped with the legendary W16 engine. This 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16 engine has set new standards in various models such as the Veyron and the Chiron. The W16 Mistral combines this impressive performance with an open design that is both aesthetically pleasing and aerodynamically optimised.

The record-breaking drive of the W16 Mistral was conducted by Andy Wallace, Bugatti's official works driver and winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The customer of the vehicle was also present at this event and had the opportunity to experience another high-speed drive as a passenger.

The W16 Mistral joins a list of Bugatti vehicles that have set world records. These include the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, which reached a top speed of 431.07 km/h (267.8 mph) in 2010, and the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+, which in 2019 became the first production vehicle to break the 300-mile-per-hour barrier (482.8 km/h), reaching a speed of 490 km/h (304.4 mph).

In addition to these records, Bugatti organised an event at which all four record-breaking vehicles were brought together for the first time. This event offered an insight into the history and technical achievements of the brand. The four cars were the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse, the Chiron Super Sport 300+ and the W16 Mistral.

What do you think?

The Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, which was launched in 2010, held the title of the world's fastest production car for a long time. With a top speed of 267.8 mph, it set new standards in the automotive industry. The Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse, which reached a top speed of 254 mph in 2013, was the fastest open-top production car of its time.

The Chiron Super Sport 300+ surpassed these records in 2019 by becoming the first production car to break the 300-mile-per-hour barrier. The W16 Mistral continues this tradition and shows that Bugatti is also a leader in the field of open-top vehicles. The event at which these vehicles came together emphasises the importance of these models and the role they play in the history of the automotive industry.
