The new 2025 Audi A5 is quite heavy

The new Audi A5 is one of the most impressive models in the segment. However, it surprises with a higher-than-expected weight figure.

The new 2025 Audi A5 is a complete departure from the model it replaces, the Audi A4. It now offers a five-door body (as opposed to the saloon format of its predecessor), so it has a similar philosophy to the old Audi A5 Sportback (which it also replaces).

Another aspect that sets it apart from its predecessors is its size. It offers a length of 4.82 metres and an impressive wheelbase of 2.89 metres, although it falls short of the 4.91 metres of the Skoda Superb and Volkswagen Passat.

Unlike its mainstream cousins, which are based on the MQB EVO platform, the new Audi A5 benefits from a more advanced architecture, called PPC and shared with the 2025 Audi Q5, launched recently in the United Kingdom.

Thanks to this base, the new Audi A5 boasts considerable technological content. In terms of powertrains, the MHEV light hybridisation system is featured in several engines, which improves efficiency.

However, there are two aspects of this model which are frankly striking. Firstly, the boot capacity is a bit tight for this segment, with 417 litres in the MHEV/Quattro variants and 445 litres in the conventional versions.

The situation does not improve significantly in the Avant estate format. In this case, the boot volume is 448 litres if it uses light hybridisation/four-wheel drive, while the rest of the combustion range makes do with 476 litres.

What do you think?

But now comes the most surprising aspect of the new car from the four rings: its weight. The manufacturer reports 1,770 kg for the base engine, rising to 1,960 kg for the 204 bhp TDI diesel with Quattro all-wheel drive (1,975 kg for the Avant).

If we take a look at the 367 bhp Audi S5, it exceeds the psychological barrier of two tons: 2,025 kg in the saloon and 2,040 kg in Avant form. And all this without the presence of electric versions or plug-in hybrids (PHEVs will come later).
