Watch This Abandoned GTI Get Its First Wash In a Decade
Of course, it’s more than a simple soap-and-rinse from the detail team.
For Larry Kosilla, car care means going above and beyond; it’s more than just removing the gunk after a downpour. His interpretation of a clean vehicle translates to a complete detail inside and out, as well as investing in a line of products designed to protect what you drive for years to come.
That is where Ammo NYC comes in, continuing the prophecy of a care service that began with opening his own car wash in 2008. Ammo was born to fulfill a need for paint protection, working with chemists to accomplish the ideal mixture that would ensure exterior surfaces stay factory fresh for years to come.
The result is a company that has attracted high-end clientele and, among other things, a YouTube channel that has picked up 2.3 million subscribers. There, you can see Larry and his dedicated team tackle each vehicle with precise attention to detail—pun intended.
Every car counts. So it’s hardly surprising when you consider the latest video, which has more than 600,000 views at the time of writing. Because the focus turns to a Volkswagen Golf GTI that had been rescued as a barn find.
The hour-long video highlights a Montana Green-painted, second-gen 1991 VW GTI getting the full restoration treatment after an initial pressure wash. The first task was to get the algae and lichen off, native to the Ohio region where it was found.
Then came the painstaking process of restoring the car from top to bottom. So the exterior bumpers and trimmings were disassembled, the engine was removed for mechanical service, and the interior was stripped of its original seats and dashboard for a deep cleaning in places the Ammo team couldn't reach otherwise.
Before being put back together, the GTI received a fresh coat of primer and Montana Green paint, committing as close to the original hue as possible. Inside, the cabin was remarkably well-preserved, meaning parts replacement was kept to a minimum. Finishing touches included a Sparco steering wheel and period-correct BBS multi-spoke wheels. Restored to its original glory, Larry took it to Lime Rock Park to celebrate the team’s achievement.
If you have an hour to spare, it’s worth the watch as every element of the rare-spec GTI gets the care it deserves. You get to see all of the involved players, not just those within the Ammo circle.
