From India: Tata presents its electric cars of the future
The Indian manufacturer unveils the Harrier.ev and the Avinya X. The former goes on sale in March, the latter anticipates a new family of cars
Tata Motors is by far the leading manufacturer in the Indian electric car market. In order to maintain its lead over increasingly fierce competition, it has unveiled two new models.
It used the stage of the New Delhi Auto Show to unveil them to the public. The two cars are called Harrier.ev and Avinya X. The former is already a production model that will go on sale in March, while the latter is a concept that anticipates a production car to be unveiled by the end of the year.
Not just low-cost cars
The Harrier.ev is the first electric car to be built on Jaguar Land Rover's D8 platform. This is a platform designed for thermal cars and then modified to form the basis for low-cost battery-powered cars. Tata is calling this zero-emission variant of the platform as OmegaArc.

At the time of the unveiling, Tata announced that the 4.6 metre long Harrier.ev will have a four-wheel drive system called 'Quad Wheel Drive'. Contrary to what you might think, it will not use four electric motors, but only two. To make the car particularly suitable for off-road use, the company promises a maximum system torque of 500 Nm. Nothing has been said about power output.
The Tata Harrier.ev aims to be a breakthrough model for the Indian electric car market. In addition to its clean and modern styling, this battery-powered SUV features a clean cabin with 10.5-inch digital instrument cluster and 12.3-inch infotainment, as well as some cutting-edge technologies such as Summon automatic parking and two-way charging.

A new family of electrics
With the Avinya X, however, Tata is presenting not just a new car, but a new brand whose very name explains the philosophy with which it is entering the market. Avinya means 'innovation' in Sanskrit.
Concept Tata Avinya X
Tata plans to produce a family of five electric models under this brand. They will be called P1, P2, P3, P4 and P5, and will all use Jaguar Land Rover's EMA platform, which will be used as the basis for electric Land Rovers. The use of this platform will allow the use of cell-to-pack batteries and an 800-volt architecture.
In this sense, the Avinya X anticipates some of the content that will characterise future cars and, more importantly, shows off their styling.
