Ford Transit XL, an American style camper for five
Inside, there's room for just about everything, from accommodating five people to all kinds of adventure gear.
As you all know, weekends are our favourite time to relax or to pursue our favourite hobbies. In our case, one of them is to tell you everything related to recreational vehicles, no matter where they come from.
In this case, we have gone to the United States to show you a really interesting model, based on the well-known Ford Transit, in a stretched chassis version, which is capable of offering space for five occupants, including beds, while being able to transport all kinds of sports or leisure equipment.

The guys at Orion Motors are responsible for bringing us this admirable project which, as you can see in the images, is an ideal option for both daily work and weekend camping with the family. At least you won't be short of space, that's for sure.
The Milwaukee-based company has taken Ford's largest commercial model (raised roof and 6.71 metres in length) in its home country and transformed its interior into a habitable module, with everything you need to survive a few days on your own, including beds for five occupants.
The transformation system is based on rails in the roof to anchor the different modules, together with a system of tilting bedsteads, which, when not in use, occupies the upper part of the interior. This frees up a lot of space for everyday tasks, such as carrying a couple of kayaks, two minibikes, several bicycles or all the extra camping gear.
Orion Motors' feat is no miracle, that's for sure. As you can see from the pictures, the interior configuration lacks a full bathroom, for example, or fixed beds, as is common in other competing models. The kitchen is reduced to the bare minimum, with a multi-burner gas hob, a small sink and a 59-litre fridge. There are no side storage cupboards either, so as not to interfere with raising the beds in the ceiling.
Don't think the absence of a fixed bathroom is a problem, though. Orion Motors opts for a portable cassette toilet, stored in a removable cargo box. Buyers can opt for the standard portable cassette toilet or a composting toilet or even a Laveo dry cistern toilet. There is no interior shower as standard, but buyers can optionally add a folding shower and a water heating system.
More creature comforts? Orion offers a 32-inch smart TV that swivels for viewing inside from the sofa, seats and bed, or outside with the rear doors open. There's also 4G connectivity from Ford and optional built-in wifi.
Also not to be forgotten is the 450Ah EcoFlow Independence modular power supply system with a 3,000-watt inverter, 400-watt solar panel array, 250A alternator and 30A grounding converter. Clean water is stored in a pair of 19-litre reservoirs under the kitchen sink (clean water and grey water); a 95-litre tank water heater is available as an option.
Finally, let's talk about prices. The Orion Motors 365 has a starting cost of $90,000 dollars (£71,500 at current exchange rates). To that amount, you have to add the cost of the van. If you prefer the van already converted, you'll have to pay about $155,000 (about £123,000 at current exchange rates). If you prefer a more country look, Orion Motors can also modify a Transit Trail AWD, if that's what the customer wants.
