Woman Is Driving On Highway For 30 Minutes. Then She Gets A Notification That The Key Fob Has Left Her Car: ‘Don’t Turn It Off’
'I'm gonna have to leave the car running for two hours.'
When it comes to worst-case scenarios behind the wheel, the possibility of having left a key fob 20 or more miles behind is about as bad as it gets. The unanswerable “What now?” question is sure to start rattling in your head as the miles continue to fly by under a car you absolutely have to keep running—or else.
TikTok viewers got an up-close look at that reality in a recent clip from creator Pheeeeee (@pheeeeee___), filmed from behind the wheel of her Dodge vehicle. As the road keeps moving, her instrument panel has suddenly and clearly told her that her key fob is no longer in the vehicle.
“Why my car talking about the key ain't in the vehicle? OK, so where the key at?” she asks in the clip that’s been viewed more than 290,000 times. “In order for me to start the car, the key was in there.”
Where's The Fob?
It’s not like there’s ever a good time to have a fob go missing, but the warning arrives at about the worst possible moment. Pheeeeee explains that she's already well into the trip and doesn't have many good options left.
“I did run out to go get something, but I'm too deep now,” she says. “I literally got 15 minutes where ... I'm headed to, and it was 45 minutes away.”
In other words, turning around would mean twice as much driving as simply continuing toward her destination. With no great options, she settled on a plan that sounded less than ideal.
“So I'm gonna have to leave the car running for two hours,” she says.
What seems to frustrate her most is that the car waited so long to mention it. Comparing the Dodge to another vehicle she owns, she notes that her other car immediately alerts her whenever the key isn't detected.
“My other car will beep and tell you that your key not in here,” she says, suggesting these kinds of occurrences are somewhat common for her.
Viewers quickly understood why the notification triggered several personal alarms and sent her into a spiral.
“What you mean it ain't here?” one commenter wrote, drawing thousands of likes.
Others admitted the scenario would immediately raise their blood pressure.
“Oooooo, mama the stress I would be in,” another viewer commented.
Several people shared stories of their own experiences with push-button-start vehicles and misplaced key fobs. One commenter recalled driving a relative's Kia, losing track of the key, and then becoming convinced the vehicle wouldn't shut off once they reached their destination.
“I was praying nobody would hop in and drive off while I was in the store,” the commenter wrote.
While the warning certainly sounds alarming, it's likely not a sign that the Dodge was about to quit running in the middle of traffic. Most modern vehicles equipped with keyless ignition systems are designed to continue operating once they've been started, even if the key fob later leaves the vehicle or falls outside the detection range.
The real concern typically comes later. Once the engine is shut off, the vehicle generally won't restart unless the key fob is present.
Manufacturers built in the warnings when a running vehicle can no longer detect its key because the current trip might be its last until the fob is located.
Dead Battery Or Bad Signal
While Pheeeeee immediately assumed the worst, the warning on her instrument panel wasn’t an absolute guarantee that the key fob had been left behind.
Keyless ignition systems rely on wireless communication between the vehicle and the fob, and a number of issues can interrupt that connection. A weak battery in the fob, interference from electronics such as cell phones or other devices, or even the fob's location in a crowded purse or bag can sometimes cause a vehicle to temporarily lose contact with it.
So it is possible the fob was still somewhere inside the Dodge and simply wasn't being detected consistently. That uncertainty may be why so many viewers were grabbed by her dilemma as the situation turned into a mystery with no obvious answer.
Some commenters tried to reassure her that the vehicle would likely continue running until she reached her destination. Others focused on the challenge that would come afterward if the car were shut off and the key truly wasn't nearby.
“Don't turn it off lol,” one viewer advised.
The clip never delivers a resolution that reveals whether the key had actually been left behind, if it was buried somewhere inside the vehicle, or whether a communication glitch triggered the warning in the first place. But by the time the video ended, hundreds of thousands of viewers were captivated by Pheeeeee’s Dodge fob dilemma.
