The restyled Volvo XC90 has brought with it many new features. Most of these are hidden in the cabin, which has been updated in everything from technology to upholstery.

It is a remarkable change for the Scandinavian SUV, which is offered exclusively with mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid petrol engines.

Volvo XC90, the dashboard

The XC90's dashboard echoes the minimalist styling seen on more recent Volvos, such as the EX30. In addition to the 12.3-inch instrument cluster and head-up display, we find a new 11.2-inch cantilevered infotainment system powered by Google's Android Automotive operating system at the centre, which is quick and easy to use and always compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless.

On the technology side, there are three different configurations for the audio system. As standard, we find a 10-speaker, 220W system, but you can also request the Harman Kardon Premium Sound (14 speakers, 600W and subwoofer) or the top-of-the-range Bowers & Wilkins with 19 speakers, 1,410W, subwoofer and four exclusive modes.

The centre tunnel has also been updated in shape, with the gear lever featuring an elegant crystal-like moulding and a retractable cup holder. In addition, four-zone climate control also allows individual airflow control for the third row of seats.

Volvo XC90, materials and finish

The choice of materials is high quality, with leather, aluminium and wood blending seamlessly into the Volvo's design. Pleasing to the touch and to the eye, they are mostly soft in the upper part of the cabin and a little rougher in the lower part.

The seats can be chosen in four different colours, from white to anthracite. There is also no shortage of customisation options for choosing various types of mouldings.

What do you think?

Space on board the XC90 is plentiful, especially for those sitting in the first two rows. The third row with two seats 'submerged' under the boot is advisable for short journeys. Boot capacity is impressive, with a minimum of around 300 litres behind the third row and 708 litres with the five-seat configuration.

Folding down all the seats gives a maximum of 1,856 litres, with a flat load floor improving the overall versatility and practicality of the compartment.
