Hopper: E-bike with bodywork now available to order from 11,900 euros

First Edition sold out, now the price is dropping.

Hopper (2021)

The Hopper is a three-wheeled vehicle with e-bike technology. So you have to pedal to move forward. Unlike a normal e-bike, however, the Hopper has a body to protect it from the rain, two seats in a row, and rear-wheel steering. Now, the price is coming down. In the future, the vehicle will be available for 11,900 euros.

Hopper Mobility was founded in 2019. The company presented the Hopper in October 2020 - we reported on Motor1.com then. The vehicle was only available to order from autumn 2023; meanwhile, the base price had risen from the targeted €7,299 to €12,800. And that was still the price with an early bird discount; from 2024, the Hopper was expected to cost €13,500.

However, the company, which is now based in Hamburg, has announced that the First Edition is sold out. They have launched a second series, which can be ordered via the online shop for 11,900 euros. "Targeted further developments and higher quantities" have reduced production costs, which are now being passed on.

The "Passenger Hopper" with two seats is available in the online shop for 12,500 euros. However, a discount of 600 euros is granted if you pay for the vehicle at the same time as ordering - this brings the price down to 11,900 euros. If you don't collect the Hopper yourself from the production site in Hamburg, you must add a delivery fee of 250 to 700 euros, depending on the distance. Five colours are available, and delivery times are currently around 8 to 12 months. Extras include hubcaps for 225 euros and side panels to protect against heavy rain for 490 euros.

As an alternative to the "Passenger-Hopper", a cargo version with only one seat but 300 instead of 125 litres of boot space is also available for 12,900 euros. With a discount, this becomes 12,300 euros. The online shop also offers a replacement battery for 1,290 euros and a replacement charger (119 euros).

Hopper (2024): The cockpit with the peculiar

The spartan cockpit with the peculiar "double steering wheel", the driver's seat and the space for the pillion passenger behind it

As is usual with e-bikes, the Hopper goes up to 25 km/h - theoretically, you can go faster, but the electric assistance stops at this speed. You ride on the cycle path or, if there is none, on the road. The battery can be removed and charged at home. The Hopper is intended as an environmentally friendly alternative to the car.

What do you think?

The cheapest "real" electric car on the German market, the Dacia Spring, costs at least 16,900 euros. Below this, there are also light electric vehicles such as the Opel Rocks Electric (from 8,340 euros) or the cargo bike.

The bottom line

The Hopper is a pleasant little vehicle that is really fun to ride - you should give it a try, test drives are offered at eight different locations in Germany. If you are not sporty or looking for a more car-like vehicle, you are probably better off with a lightweight electric vehicle, which can even be cheaper. One disadvantage of the Hopper in the city is that it can be tight on the cycle path with the two-lane vehicle. Vehicles like the Hopper are probably still more for those who are convinced that they don't want to buy a large battery or similar for the sake of the environment.
