Caterham Seven CSR Twenty debuts as expensive anniversary roadster

Caterham is throwing a party in the form of a car, and only 20 lucky enthusiasts in the United Kingdom will get an invite. Meet the new limited-edition Seven CSR Twenty, a speed-hungry throwback celebrating 20 years of the famed CSR chassis. It’s the first model to roll out of the company’s snazzy new Dartford factory, making this car not only a collector’s dream but also a bit of Caterham history on wheels.

With a base price of £79,995 in the UK, the CSR Twenty is hardly small change. But then, this isn’t just any Seven – this is the most polished, powerful, and downright British model Caterham has ever cooked up. The CSR Twenty sports the firm’s famed CSR chassis – the one with a finely-tuned inboard front suspension, providing that all-important “stick to the road” feeling that Caterham devotees love. Add in fully independent rear suspension, and you’ve got a car that handles curves like a sports coupe, not a minimalist roadster.

Under the bonnet, things get seriously lively with the popular 210 bhp 2.0-litre Ford Duratec engine. This power plant is borrowed from Caterham’s Seven 420 and promises a 0-60 mph sprint in a blistering 3.9 seconds. Flat out, it’ll reach 136 mph, assuming you have the nerve (and the road) to try. Paired with a five-speed manual transmission and stopping power from quad-piston brake calipers, the CSR Twenty is all about hardcore performance with a dollop of retro style.

The car’s design echoes its anniversary spirit, sporting luxurious details to make even the most sceptical onlooker stop and stare. Inside, a satin carbon dashboard, plush leather trims, and unique CSR Twenty dials provide a plush cockpit that’s all about refined speed. Each of the 20 cars will feature a numbered plaque, just in case anyone forgets how exclusive this ride really is. The CSR Twenty seats, adorned with Alcantara inserts and red stitching, add an extra dash of flair that’s more luxury lounge than a stripped-back roadster.

Outside, the CSR Twenty struts its stuff with a Seven 620-inspired nose cone, red brake calipers, a stylish Union Jack grille, and Vulcan 15-inch alloys, debuting for the first time on a UK Caterham model. If that doesn’t turn heads, the LED lighting and sleek Mohair boot cover surely will. Buyers can also choose between two exterior colours – Kinetic Grey and Dynamic Silver.
