UK ranks most transparent in Europe's used car market
For a second year in a row.
Once again, the United Kingdom has sped past the rest of Europe to claim the top spot as the most transparent used car market, according to the latest report by carVertical. While Europe’s used car scene is packed with twists and turns, British buyers enjoy smoother rides: only 2.1 per cent of second-hand cars in the UK have clocked or tampered mileage, and just 17.8 per cent show signs of previous damage. If you’re looking to buy a reliable used car, it seems Britain’s got you covered, as long as the steering wheel position fits you.
This annual study, conducted across 25 countries, is a deep dive into the murky waters of used car sales. With metrics like odometer fraud, damage history, and the average age of vehicles, carVertical’s report gives a clear view of the best (and worst) places to buy a used car across Europe. Higher scores mean more transparency, reducing the risk of buyers finding themselves saddled with hidden issues or dubious histories.

One factor tipping the UK scales toward transparency? Its fondness for right-hand drive vehicles, which keeps imports down to just 2 per cent of second-hand cars on the market. With fewer imports, the UK sidesteps a key factor tied to car scams. Imports often come with hefty baggage – think clocked mileage or hidden damage. By keeping it local, the UK gives its car shoppers a head start in avoiding these pitfalls.
Joining the UK in the “Top 5 Most Transparent” podium are Italy, Switzerland, Germany, and Sweden. In Switzerland, 2.1 per cent of used cars have tampered odometers, while Germany follows closely at 2.8 per cent. On the other hand, Italians seem to have a knack for clean records, boasting a low 12.6 per cent rate of damaged used cars. Meanwhile, Switzerland’s damaged car rate soars to 55.3 per cent – not ideal, but Swiss buyers can at least rest assured about the authenticity of their mileage.
For buyers in Western Europe and Scandinavia, the used car landscape is a relatively safe playground. Thanks to stricter laws and generally newer vehicles, countries like Germany and Sweden offer a more transparent market, where mileage fraud and hidden issues are rarer.
But the same can’t be said for Central and Eastern Europe, where buyers need to keep their eyes peeled. Slovenia, a standout in Central Europe, has earned the 7th spot, with 3.7 per cent clocked and 30.6 per cent damaged vehicles. Neighbouring countries like the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary fall behind with significantly higher damage rates, often over 50 per cent.
The report shows that in regions where disposable incomes are lower, demand for cheaper, older vehicles creates a prime market for imports that may come with “hidden surprises.” In the Czech Republic, for instance, 42.5 per cent of used cars are imports, a figure that jumps to 49.2 per cent in Slovakia, 77.4 per cent in Bulgaria, and 81.1 per cent in Ukraine.
So, whether you’re in the market for a thrifty used car or a European road trip, carVertical’s study reveals that not all roads lead to an honest deal. The UK's top ranking shows that, at least for British buyers, buying a second-hand car doesn’t have to be a journey into the unknown. For buyers further east, though, it’s worth keeping an eye on the dashboard and the vehicle’s previous reports.
