‘It Saved Me Money:’ Woman Goes to Discount Tire for New Tires. Then She Pulls Out Her Costco Card
'They price match too if u find them cheaper just need the ad in ur local area or website.'
A woman’s sharp listening skills helped her secure a deal on new tires at Discount Tire—and it’s all because of her Costco card. Here’s what she says happened.
TikTok user Pie & Prayer (@pieandprayer) posted a video with her discovery on Saturday. “If you’re getting new tires from Discount Tire and you have a Costco membership, Costco does not have an installation fee, and if you tell them that you have a Costco membership, Discount Tire will waive the installation,” she says to start the video.
How Does She Know That?
Well, she explains that the week prior, she went to purchase a new set of tires at Discount Tire. That’s when she overheard the salesperson trying to close a sale with a couple. The salesperson asked the couple if they were considering going to Costco, and the woman replied that they were.
“He goes, ‘We will waive the installation fee, since they waive the installation fee,’” Pie & Prayer says. “They still passed, but it saved me money. So I pulled [my Costco card] out, and he goes, ‘Alright,’ and waived the price of installation, which saved a lot of money because they charge per tire.”
‘My Costco Tires Were $200 Cheaper Than Discount Tire’
In the comments section, viewers debated the merits of Discount Tire versus Costco when it comes to the price of new tires.
“I’ll still go with Costco,” wrote one person.
“The only benefit—and I mean the only benefit—to buying at Discount Tire is they have more locations and you can get in and out faster. Everything else Costco does better,” agreed another user.
“I still love Costco, but I won’t buy tires there again,” offered a third user. “Went back to Discount Tire where you get same-day service.”
A fourth viewer said, “Used to work at Costco tire. People always wait until it snows, ‘[I] tell them it will be about five hours for install. They stomp out [saying], ‘I’m going to Discount Tire.’ Two hours later [they] come back.”
What Perks Does Each Retailer Offer?
As several viewers in the comments stated, Costco’s Installation Package includes rotation, balancing, and flat repairs over the life of the tire. Discount Tire offers price matching, and its Life of Tire Maintenance service includes free rotation, rebalancing, air pressure checks, flat repair, and tire safety inspection.
In terms of warranties, MSN thinks that Discount Tire offers a better customer experience, albeit at a higher price point. It really comes down to Discount Tire being easier to both contact and get in for an appointment. Costco’s warranty comes along with some red tape that makes it slightly harder to take advantage of the protection.
Motor1 reached out to Pie & Prayer via TikTok comment and direct message for comment. It also reached out to Costco via media contact form and Discount Tire via email.
Update July 11 9:35 a.m. ET: In correspendance with Motor1, the TikToker said, "I've been going to the Discount Tire in Woodbury, MN for years. ... I went in because one tire was loosing air, the Discount Tire associate found a nail in it but upon further inspection, found that only the inside of my tires were bald, he asked me when was the last time I had an alignment."
She says she didn't expect this question because the visible tread on her tire was "in great condition."
She continued, "As expected, they try to up-sale you but on my 2007 vehicle, I don’t need the most expensive tires, just good ones for Minnesota. ... I’ve been going to Discount Tire for much longer than I’ve been a Costco member. There’s certain conveniences that Discount Tire has, especially during the harsh Minnesota winters, such as being able to pull up, while remaining in your vehicle and having more air added. And believe it or not, even the music they play inside of the Discount Tire in Woodbury, MN makes a difference to older generations, like mine, it’s always pleasant. The one area that I am now aware of, due to the comments, is that Costco provides a free road hazard warranty. This is the only thing that would cause me to seriously look into Costco for my tires next time."
