The Pebble Flow rolls in: The future of caravaning?
US start-up with autonomous manoeuvring, e-car support and 7 days of self-sufficiency
Californian start-up Pebble is shaking up the camping industry with its all-electric Flow caravan. The highly anticipated Pebble Flow promises a new travel experience and is now available to order in the USA. Its innovative design and advanced technology set it apart from conventional caravans.
With its aerodynamic design, the Pebble Flow is a modern interpretation of the legendary Airstream. But while Airstream recently cooperated with Porsche, Pebble is going it alone. The 7.60 metre long caravan promises nothing less than the reinvention of camping.
The Pebble Flow boasts a minimalist exterior and smart app controls. According to the manufacturer, the Pebble Flow's aerodynamic shape makes it 300 per cent more streamlined than a conventional caravan. This has a positive effect on energy consumption and range. The sloping front and tapered rear make the Flow a real eye-catcher on the road.
Inside, the 7.60 metre long caravan has a well thought out layout. Large windows give an impressive 270-degree view and plenty of daylight. The kitchen is equipped with modern appliances including an induction hob, microwave and fridge. A highlight is the large window that opens to allow easy access to the outside.
The rear double bed converts into a compact desk with USB-C ports. Ideal for digital nomads who want to be productive on the move. For an extra charge, you can even get a Starlink internet connection for reliable work, no matter how remote the campsite.
At the heart of the Pebble Flow is a 45 kWh LFP battery that provides up to seven days of self-sufficiency. Solar cells on the roof provide a continuous supply of energy. As well as powering the vehicle's electronics, it also acts as a charging station for electric vehicles. This makes driving an electric car a relaxed trip without range anxiety.
A real innovation is the driving assistance: thanks to two electric motors, the caravan partially drives itself. This reduces the load on the towing vehicle and significantly increases the range of electric vehicles in trailer mode.
The Pebble Flow is not the only self-propelled electric caravan. The Lightship L1 from the USA is also based on this pioneering concept. It is conveniently controlled via an app. From lighting and air conditioning to autonomous hitching and manoeuvring around the campsite, everything can be controlled at the touch of a finger. The 'Magic Hitch' system even allows the vehicle to dock automatically with the towing vehicle.
If you want to get a taste of the future of camping, you can pre-order the Pebble Flow in the USA. The base price starts at $109,500 (approx. £88,000). With the optional 'Magic Pack', which includes the two drive motors, the price rises to $125,000 (£100,000). First deliveries are scheduled for the first half of 2025.
Whether the price is justified for many buyers remains to be seen. What is certain is that the Pebble Flow's combination of innovative design, advanced technology and sustainable drive technology will set new standards. Who knows, we may soon be looking back wistfully at the days when caravans had to be pulled by cars, not the other way around.
