The Toyota Prius gets an update for 2025 with new changes aimed at improving efficiency and energy management. The new range, in particular, sees the introduction of some new advanced technologies in the standard equipment, including an intelligent geo-fencing system and the Digital Key for smartphones.

Moreover, thanks to some mechanical optimisations, it is now capable of travelling up to 68 miles in the urban WLTP cycle with zero emissions. Here are all the details.

Improved efficiency and extended range

To talk about what's new in the Toyota Prius for 2025, let's start with the most interesting data, namely the electric range. According to the company, from the new model year the Japanese saloon will be able to cover up to 53 miles with zero emissions according to the WLTP combined cycle, a figure that can rise to 68 miles in the urban cycle, also WLTP.

This is a significant improvement on the 43 miles declared at the presentation in 2024 and has led to a reduction in the declared consumption of the most efficient version, which is now 0.5 l/100 km (565 mpg) with CO2 emissions of 11 g/km. Finally, the photovoltaic roof is also available to recharge the battery, giving up to 5.4 miles of range per day.

Geo-fencing for automated energy management

Speaking of technology, one of the key innovations in the Toyota Prius 2025 range is the new geo-fencing system, which analyses road conditions and usual routes to optimise battery use. The system, which is already familiar to us, can automatically switch the car from hybrid to electric mode and conserve charge for later journeys through restricted traffic zones reserved for electric vehicles.

What do you think?

But that's not all, because other new standard features include a new digital key system that allows the vehicle to be accessed and started via smartphone and an enhanced wireless smartphone charger between the front seats. Finally, speaking of safety, Toyota Safety Sense systems, with advanced driver assistance and accident prevention features, remain of course available as standard.

Prices for the UK have not yet been announced.
