Hybrid Cars Don't Necessarily Need Special Motor Oil. Here's Why
Here's what you need to know when shopping for oil to go in your hybrid.
Hybrid cars are inherently complex machines. They have two sources of propulsion: an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. Combining them into one fluid surge of power is the job of highly advanced transmissions while powerful computers decide when to switch between one and the other. These cars are a far cry from the simple carbureted machines our grandparents drove, and yet hybrids still have an internal combustion engine onboard that requires some of the same maintenance and oil as Papa’s Cutlass.
That’s right, even though gas engines in today’s modern hybrids are far more technologically advanced and look nothing like an old V6 from the ‘80s, they still need lubrication. And despite myths to the contrary, they use the same motor oil that non-hybrid vehicles today use.
That said, a hybrid’s engine lives a very different life than the engine in a traditional car. In particular, it turns on and off far more frequently thanks to technologies like stop-start and the hybrid’s computer brain deciding when it’s possible to run on electricity alone. Therefore, a hybrid’s engine often doesn’t have the opportunity to reach the typical operating temperatures of an engine in a traditional car.
Motor oils do their best work when an engine is warmed up, so hybrid engines require a more robust motor oil that can protect them at lower operating temperatures. Companies like Castrol sell a large lineup of motor oils for every type of car. In particular, the Castrol EDGE line of fully synthetic motor oil offers the highest level of protection you can buy, which makes it perfect for protecting a hybrid’s gas engine in three important ways.
Cooler engine temps like those experienced by a hybrid’s engine can lead to water and fuel build-up in the oil. If the engine can’t get hot enough to burn off these contaminants, they can lead to the formation of engine sludge. According to Castrol, its fully synthetic EDGE motor oil suspends water 24X better than the leading fully synthetic competitor, which keeps these contaminants in the oil and away from harming your engine components with corrosion.
Secondly, a hybrid’s gas engine often comes on for the first time when accelerating the car to high speeds, like on a highway on-ramp. In these situations, the gas engine must reach high engine speeds quickly while cold, and some lower quality motor oils just can’t keep up with adequate oil coverage and protection in these situations. Castrol has designed its fully synthetic EDGE motor oil to work from the moment you start the engine, which, according to the company, reduces wear up to 6X better than industry test limits.
Lastly, when a hybrid’s engine is operating just to recharge its battery, it’s again often running at cooler temperatures than a typical engine because it’s operating intermittently. Cooler engines will experience increased internal friction if the oil in them can’t lubricate all of their parts as well at lower temperatures. Friction reduces the overall efficiency of the hybrid powertrain, thereby increasing fuel use and lowering fuel economy. Castrol says its EDGE motor oil, however, achieves 5X better performance in the industry standard low temperature wear test, which means your hybrid will keep providing those high MPGs you like so much.
Believe it or not, 1 in 4 vehicles sold globally will be hybrids by 2025, which means the chances you’ll find yourself responsible for the care and upkeep of a hybrid is high. So while there is no hybrid-specific motor oil needed to keep your hybrid’s engine running smoothly, it is true that hybrid engines benefit greatly from using the best-performing motor oil on the market such as Castrol EDGE.
