A woman went to the Jeep dealership to take care of a safety issue, and decided to get an annual service while she was there. But before she agreed to the estimate, she decided to ask ChatGPT if she was doing the right thing.

She says this split-second decision saved her $400.

TIkTok creator Debra (@debrafduncan) posted a video about the advice she got from the artificial intelligence platform.

“Hey I’m at the Jeep dealership,” she says to start the video. “I had to bring my Jeep in because my top in. I have a soft top and it’s not closing—safety hazard.”

How Did ChatGPT Help Jeep Owner Save Money?

While she was there, Debra says she decided to get her 80,000-mile/60-month maintenance service done.

“I haven’t done it in a long time, and I figured let’s get a good one,” she says. “I was expecting my bill to be about $1,000 and they said it was going to be $1,800.”

“So I said, ‘Can you print that for me?’” she says. “I went outside, talked to ChatGPT; thank god for ChatGPT. Just went over everything and he’s like, ‘Don’t do the rear service differential, because unless you tow heavy stuff, you probably don’t need it and it’s just like a thing they're trying to upsell.’”

In conclusion, she says, “That saved me $400. So thank god for ChatGPT. It’s like my man about town.”

Viewers React To The Woman’s ChatGPT Jeep Advice

In the comments section of the video, viewers asked questions about Debra’s experience at the dealership and offered their own advice on her situation.

“Trade it in for a 4Runner while that thing is still off life support,” wrote one viewer. In response, Debra wrote, “I love my Jeep.”

“How is a convertible top a safety hazard?” asked a second viewer. Debra replied that it was flipping open while she drove.

“Flushes are all BS,” a third person said.

Another person simply weighed in with a photo of a dog looking disgusted.

Did Debra Get Good Advice From ChatGPT?

According to Clement Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Columbia, the rear differential controls the individual speeds of the rear wheels of the Jeep. What Debra appears to be referring to is a rear differential service, which is recommended at every 30,000-60,000 miles.

Changing the fluid makes sure the rear differential operates normally, and that’s why experts say delaying the service could result in problems down the line. According to Your Mechanic, roughly $400 is a fair price for the job.

What do you think?

As to the question of whether it’s necessary, one Reddit user on a thread posted to r/Wrangler a year ago is in line with what ChatGPT told Debra. “I change the front and rear differential fluid and transfer case fluid annually because I go through water regularly,” they wrote. “If you’re not doing anything with your Jeep, just stick with the owner’s manual interval.”

Motor1 contacted Debra via TikTok comment and direct message for comment. We also contacted Jeep parent company Stellantis and ChatGPT parent company OpenAI via email for comment. We'll be sure to update this article if they respond.
