‘Jiffy Lube Strikes Again!’: Mechanic Inspects Mini Cooper. Then He Sees What Jiffy Lube Forgot To Do

A mechanic says a customer’s oil leak turned out to be much worse than expected after he discovered a missing gasket on a recently installed oil filter—and he believes Jiffy Lube may be to blame.

TikTok creator @wrenchboss_nj filmed himself diagnosing a leaking Mini Cooper that a customer had brought into the shop.

According to the mechanic, he initially added oil dye to the engine to help pinpoint the source of the leak. But once he put the car on the lift, the problem became obvious almost immediately: Oil dripped directly onto the shop floor beneath it.

“I found the leak!” he says in the clip. “It’s definitely leaking.”

The mechanic says he quickly realized he probably never needed the dye in the first place because the oil was “leaking right out.” Still, he says the dye helped him track down the exact source of the problem.

“There’s no gasket on the [expletive] thing,” @wrenchboss_nj says while pointing toward the oil filter housing. “There’s your sign.”

According to the mechanic, the car had what appeared to be a brand-new oil filter installed, leading him to believe the vehicle had recently received an oil change. But he says the gasket was completely missing from the filter setup.

After checking the windshield sticker inside the car, the mechanic says that Jiffy Lube appeared to have last serviced the vehicle.

“Nothing but the best, guys,” @wrenchboss_nj says sarcastically.

The mechanic says he replaced the filter, confirmed the leak had stopped, and cleaned oil residue from underneath the car before returning it to the customer.

“JIFFY LUBE STRIKES AGAIN,” text overlaid on the video reads. In the caption, @wrenchboss_nj adds, “Does Jiffy Lube even train their employees?”

As of this writing, the video had more than 79,900 views.

How Important Is The Gasket On An Oil Filter?

Jiffy Lube admits that gasket problems can cause major oil leaks.

Oil filters rely on a rubber gasket to create a tight seal between the filter and the engine. But without it, oil can leak out quickly once the engine is running because there is nothing properly sealing the connection.

In some cases, the gasket is accidentally left behind from the previous oil filter during an oil change. Mechanics sometimes call it a “double gasket” situation because the new filter is installed on top of the old rubber seal, creating uneven compression and other issues that can eventually lead to leaks.

Other times, the gasket can get damaged during installation, improperly tightened, or, in the case of the Mini Cooper @wrenchboss_nj serviced, be missing altogether.

An oil leak that starts immediately after an oil change can often be traced back to an installation issue, such as an improperly seated filter or a damaged seal.

Driving with a car that is leaking oil is dangerous. If a car is leaking oil badly enough, continuing to use it can damage or even destroy the engine. Once too much oil leaks out, things can start overheating or grinding against each other, leading to more expensive repairs.

Quick Lube Complaints

Quick oil change chains, such as Jiffy Lube, have been accused by some drivers of rushing service and of their mechanics making the occasional mistake during routine maintenance.

Some of the most common complaints drivers raise involve oil leaks after service, forgotten oil caps, or improperly installed filters.

That does not mean every quick lube shop does poor work, of course. Since many locations operate as franchises, experiences can vary widely depending on the shop and whoever is working on the car that day. And just like any profession, even the best mechanic can make a mistake.

Commenters Debate Mechanic’s Reaction

Not everyone in the comments agreed that the situation was as dramatic as the mechanic made it sound.

“Bro dissin on Jiffy like he didn’t work in the pits,” one viewer wrote.

“Doing too much respectfully,” another commenter added.

Others brushed the issue off as the kind of mistake that can happen in a busy shop environment.

“Hourly employees lol,” one person remarked.

The creator fired back in the replies, writing, “Flat rate is for idiots.”

Some viewers, though, defended the mechanic for taking the leak seriously.

“How he doing to much??? Y’all people just never met a mechanic who actually takes pride in [their] work!!! And doesn’t show up for a paycheck every week!!!!” one commenter argued.

A few viewers also focused on the terminology itself, pointing out that the missing piece was technically an O-ring.

“It’s an O-ring, not a gasket,” one person corrected. (An o-ring is a type of gasket, but not all gaskets are o-rings.)

“Simple o ring, smdh,” another added.

Others used the video to share their own frustrations after oil changes.

What do you think?

“I just got an oil change, now there [are] oil marks on my driveway,” one viewer wrote.
