'Hertz Has Falsely Accused At Least 360 People:' Enterprise Accuses Couple Of 'Ruining' Dodge. Then The Couple Pulls Uno Reverse
'I will start keeping receipts.'
A woman is going viral on TikTok after recounting a story she says nearly left a couple on the hook for $10,000 over a rental car dispute.
Morgan Ballengee (@morganized214), a Dallas-based content creator, shared the story of a Canadian couple, Kelly and Katherine Graves, who she says were accused by Enterprise of “ruining” a rental after allegedly filling it with diesel.
According to Ballengee, Enterprise contacted the couple after they had returned the car. She said they had kept receipts from when they filled up, which they believed would support their claim.
The situation also changed how Ballengee thinks about renting cars.
She said she already makes a point to document everything—taking photos and videos of the exterior and the odometer before and after a trip, along with shots of the gas tank.
“But I never thought to actually keep my physical gas receipt,” Ballengee says.
Ballengee said the case eventually took a turn when a reporter looked into it and went to the gas station involved. According to her, the diesel nozzle would not have fit into the car, raising questions about how the mix-up happened.
Ballengee suggested the issue may have come from inside the company, saying a “low-level Enterprise employee” could have put diesel in the vehicle and then blamed the renters.
“I’m just dismayed at this corporate greed,” Ballengee says. As of this writing, the video has more than 12,400 views.
What Happened With The Enterprise Dodge Durango?
What Ballengee is describing is based on a real case that drew attention after Enterprise wrongly blamed two renters for damaging a rental car.
According to CBC, the Graveses, a Canadian couple, rented a Dodge Durango and returned it without any issues. About a week later, they said they were contacted and told they had filled the car with diesel, which would have damaged the engine. Months after that, they were hit with a bill for roughly $9,500 in repairs.
They pushed back.
The couple said they kept their gas receipts, which showed they only purchased regular fuel. They also had a photo of the pump they used, and it didn’t even offer diesel. On top of that, the type of vehicle they rented had a fuel system designed so a diesel nozzle wouldn’t fit in the first place.
There were other red flags, too. A mechanic noted that if the car had actually been filled with diesel, it likely wouldn’t have made it back to the rental location without breaking down.
After the couple hired a lawyer and the situation got media attention, the company dropped the claim. According to Ballengee, the explanation was that it couldn’t verify where the fuel came from.
The situation is a reminder of how these disputes can play out. Even when nothing goes wrong during a rental, issues can surface later, and they can be expensive.
It’s a good reminder to keep a paper trail. Taking a few photos, a quick video, or even holding onto a gas receipt can make a big difference if you ever have to push back on a charge.
Viewers Debunk Enterprise’s Claim
Even though the dispute between Enterprise and the Graveses has already been resolved, commenters said the company’s claim didn’t add up from the start.
“They would not have been able to drive it from the gas station to the rental car return if it had diesel! This is crazy,” one person wrote.
“There is no way they would have been able to drive that car after putting diesel fuel in it,” another added. “Diesel fuel is heavier than gasoline, so it would sink down to where the fuel pump will pick up the gas and immediately start causing engine issues.”
Some viewers used the moment to share their own experiences dealing with rental car disputes.
“Enterprise did the same thing to me,” one person said. “I showed them every receipt for gas,” one person shared.
“I had something similar happen at Enterprise,” another commenter added. “They said I damaged the front end. I absolutely did not. I’m positive the attendant did it, but I couldn’t prove otherwise.”
Others pointed out that these kinds of issues aren’t limited to one company.
“My daughter’s friend returned a car to Hertz in a hurry and did not grab a receipt,” one person wrote. “They charged the heck out of her credit card, claiming she never returned the car. It was a months-long ordeal trying to straighten out the whole mess.”
Several people said situations like this are exactly why they keep documentation from every rental.
“I’m gonna be aware of that and keep all receipts and take pictures of the gas pump with the receipt in front of it lol,” one person wrote.
“Great, I will start keeping receipts,” another said.
