Meet The Diesel Plug-In Hybrid Pickup America Won't Get

Chery Automotive has introduced a new truck concept for the Australian market. It's codenamed the KP31, and it features a unique powertrain under the hood: a plug-in hybrid diesel. It goes on sale later this year in Australia.
Unfortunately, most of the specifics remain under wraps. We know that Chery pairs a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a plug-in hybrid setup, but things like horsepower and torque are a mystery for now.
Chery KP31 Concept
Visually, the KP31 is nearly identical to the Rely P3X that debuted in China last year. It has a flat face, round headlights, plastic cladding around the fenders, and an upright greenhouse. It even features a snorkel, 285/70 R17 all-terrain tires, and a bed rack with recovery tracks.
Lucas Harris, Chery Australia Chief Operating Officer, notes: "It’s also riveting to be the first brand to offer a diesel PHEV in the dual-cab ute class, which will be our key point of difference compared to the competition."
The Specs We Know
Chery claims its turbocharged 2.5-liter plug-in hybrid diesel is 10 percent more fuel efficient “compared to the average diesel powertrain,” while achieving 47 percent thermal efficiency. The automaker also reduced vibrations by 30 percent.
The concept measures 220.9 inches long (5,610 millimeters), 75.6 in (1,920 mm) wide, and 75.8 in (1,925 mm) tall. Chery said the production version will be slightly shorter at 214.6 in (5,450 mm). The truck will have a 7,700-pound towing capacity and a 2,205-pound payload limit.
Chery said it would also launch a plug-in gasoline hybrid version of the truck in 2027. However, it did not provide any details.
When Will It Arrive?
Chery says the new truck will go on sale in Australia in the fourth quarter of this year. The automaker will release the full specifications, including pricing and name, closer to the truck’s on-sale date.

Motor1’s Take: If automakers must electrify their vehicles to meet emissions targets, the combined torque of a plug-in hybrid diesel isn’t a terrible option. This type of powertrain is perfect for pickups, providing the power to have fun off-road or do real work, and is just another truck we can't have in America.
