RIP: These SUVs Are Dead For 2027

Rust in peace to SUVs like the Acura RDX, Ford Escape, and Tesla Model X.

The SUV landscape is always changing; familiar nameplates leave the market and new ones come in to replace them. Whether an SUV simply reaches the end of its lifecycle or it loses its sales steam, there’s almost always another one waiting to take its place.

Going into 2027, some automakers will say goodbye to their longest-lasting SUVs. Staples like the Ford Escape will end their run after a quarter century in the US. An EV that helped define the segment, the Tesla Model X, will disappear after more than a decade. Meanwhile, newer EVs like the Honda Prologue and Volvo EX30 are already being shown the door.

Through August, nearly a dozen SUVs are already on the chopping block for 2027—or, in some cases, they simply won't be available in the US market. Here's a look at what's disappearing, why each model is going away, and what could replace it.

Acura RDX*

2007-2026

Acura announced earlier this year that it would end RDX production, with no model planned for 2027. That said, the automaker did confirm that it is working on a hybrid successor, arriving within "a couple of years" (thus the asterisk).

The RDX is Acura’s mid-range SUV offering, slotting between the ADX and MDX, both of which are newer. Acura launched the third-generation RDX for the 2019 model year, but it was starting to show its age.

BMW iX

2022-2026

BMW hasn’t ended iX production yet, but the automaker did announce it would end allocations of the electric SUV to the United States this year. BMW designed the iX as a flagship to showcase its fifth-generation electric-vehicle technology.

Sales for the iX peaked in 2023 and have been falling ever since. Now that BMW has its Neue Klasse models—including the iX3—the SUV has played its role and will soon leave the lineup.

Ford Escape

2021-2026

The Ford Escape has been a Blue Oval staple for a quarter century, but the automaker decided to kill the popular crossover for 2027. The decision will help make room to produce a lineup of affordable electric vehicles at the same factory.

With the death of the Escape, Ford’s only offering in the compact crossover segment will be the Bronco Sport. But rumor has it that the Escape name might return in the future.

Jaguar F-Pace

2015-2026

Two years ago, Jaguar killed nearly every model in its lineup, and now the F-Pace is on the way out too. This will leave the luxury automaker without a model to sell until the Type 01 finally enters production as the brand attempts to move upmarket and compete with brands like Bentley instead of BMW.

The F-Pace first went on sale a decade ago, with Jaguar offering a plethora of powertrain types in the SUV, including diesel and hybrids. The company even offered a hardcore SVR version with a V8. It’s unclear if Jag has a new SUV on the horizon.

Honda Prologue

2024-2026

Honda has officially killed the Prologue, the electric SUV riding on General Motors’ Ultium platform. The Japanese automaker will cease Prologue production at the end of 2026.

The reason? Honda says demand for EVs has “shifted significantly,” with the automaker doubling down on hybrids. Although it never actually made it to production, the 0 Series SUV will follow the Prologue to the big junkyard in the sky.

Land Rover Discovery Sport

2014-2026

Production for the Land Rover Discovery Sport, the automaker’s entry-level model, will end this December. That makes the Range Rover Evoque the brand’s cheapest offering (for now).

Land Rover launched the Disco Sport over a decade ago, and it quickly became its best-selling model. The automaker is transitioning the factory to build JLR’s next-generation models.

Polestar 3 / 4

2024-2026 (US)

Polestar, as a brand, is dead in the United States, killing the 3 and 4 along with it. The brand is owned by Volvo and Geely Holding Group, the Chinese corporation that operates Geely Auto, and new rules in the United States restrict the import and sale of connected cars with ties to China or Russia.

The US Department of Commerce did not grant the automaker authorization to sell cars here, and Polestar said it will not appeal the decision. Sad.

Tesla Model X

2015-2026

The Tesla Model X was the automaker’s much-needed crossover that launched a decade ago. Like other Tesla models, the Model X faced production delays related to the complex Falcon doors, but it made the luxury electric crossover stand out.

The automaker refined the SUV over its life, giving it a refresh in late 2021. Tesla’s ambitions have since shifted, with Tesla killing off the luxury electric model to produce humanoid robots. That's right, robots.

Volkswagen ID.4*

2021-2026

The ID.4 was Volkswagen’s first dedicated electric vehicle, launching in the United States for 2022. Now, the automaker is temporarily ending production (thus the asterisk) of the crossover until further notice to make room for the more-profitable Atlas.

VW says it will offer a "future version" of the model in North America at some point, and it might be called the ID. Tiguan (though that’s just a rumor). VW hasn’t hinted at when a new ID.4 / ID. Tiguan could arrive.

Volvo EX30

Volvo is blaming "shifting market conditions" as the reason for killing its electric EX30 after just one year. The compact electric crossover had a starting price of just over $40,000, making it the brand’s cheapest EV in the United States.

Volvo even offered the EX30 as a 422-horsepower dual-motor variant, but clearly that wasn’t enough to turn it into a sales success. We won’t be sad to see it go.
