Chery Automotive has introduced a new truck concept, the KP31, tailored for the Australian market. This vehicle features a plug-in hybrid diesel powertrain and is set to be available for purchase later this year. The KP31 boasts a distinctive design with a flat face, round headlights, plastic cladding around the fenders, and an upright greenhouse. It is equipped with a snorkel, 285/70 R17 all-terrain tires, and a bed rack with recovery tracks, making it suitable for rugged terrains. The KP31 is powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter plug-in hybrid diesel engine, although specific horsepower and torque ratings have not been disclosed. Chery claims that this engine is 10 percent more fuel-efficient than the average diesel powertrain and achieves a 47 percent thermal efficiency, while also reducing vibrations by 30 percent. The concept measures 220.9 inches in length, 75.6 inches in width, and 75.8 inches in height, but the production version will be slightly shorter at 214.6 inches long. It will offer a towing capacity of 7,700 pounds and a payload limit of 2,205 pounds
Chery plans to launch a plug-in gasoline hybrid version of the truck in 2027, though details about this version have not been released. The new truck is expected to hit the Australian market in the fourth quarter of this year, with full specifications, including pricing and the final name, to be announced closer to the sale date. This launch positions Chery as the first brand to offer a diesel PHEV in the dual-cab ute class, providing a unique selling point against competitors.
