'Owning A Chevy Cruze Is A Canon Event:' Woman Revs Her Car While She Pumps Gas. Otherwise It Won't Work

Many cars, especially older ones, have peculiarities only known to their drivers. A woman recently filmed a Chevy Cruze with a unique and rather frightening peccadillo.

In a TikTok that’s generated over 749,500 views as of this writing, Kaylee (@kaylee_life10) films a Chevy Cruze driver putting the pedal to the metal while pumping gas. To add more intensity to the situation, she revs the engine while pumping the gas.

"POV: she’s revving her car while she gets gas bc it ‘stops’ if she doesn’t" an on-screen caption reads.

"Are we going to blow up?" Kaylee adds.

Either the driver is horribly misinformed, or she believes, rightly or wrongly, that the car has to be running and the engine actively being revved in order to pump gas. The Cruze’s driver appears well aware of the absurdity of the situation, leaning over the steering wheel and covering her mouth with her hand to hide her expression.

People could simply not believe it.

"Everyday I realize that common sense isn’t common at all," one responded to Kaylee’s video.. 

"Jesus this world is cooked," another commented. 

"It’s supposed to stop. You are supposed to turn the car off," a third said.

"Don’t do this omg," a third urged.

"Why’s your car even on?" another wondered.

How Do Chevy Cruze Drivers Feel About Their Cars?

Former and current Chevy Cruze owners flocked to the comments to share their experiences. Some advised others to avoid at all costs. 

"Owning a Chevy Cruze is a canon event I swear," one said. 

"So this is why my mom told me no to a Chevy Cruze," another commented.

"NEVER AND WHEN I SAY NEVER GET A CHEVY CRUZE. Mine literally cried oil and overheated every other day," one shared.

Others defended their Cruze and blamed the drivers.

"What are y’all doing with your Chevy Cruzes… mine’s fine?" one added.

"My Chevy Cruze is fine?!? What are yall doing to yours?!?" another echoed. 

Four Ways to Prevent A Fire at a Gas Station

Being informed about safe gas pumping fueling practices can ultimately live your life.

Knowing what not to do is essential for keeping yourself and others safe when fueling up. Here are four things to do that help prevent a gas station fire, according to Fire-Alert:

• Never smoke or spark a flame: Avoid smoking, sparking a match, lighter, or any form of flame around the pump. Flames are the kickstarter for a massive explosion when mixed with gasoline.
• Turn off your car engine: Leaving your car engine on can lead to an ignition of fire with the static electricity lingering and interacting with gasoline. One way to ensure this is to completely take out your car keys out of the ignition when pumping.
• Stay off your phone: First and foremost, phones are distracting and full attention should be directed towards pumping gas to avoid overfilling. Additionally, phones have an internal component within that can be flammable. While this is rare, it’s something to be aware of.
• Discharge any static energy prior to pumping: Static energy can potentially create a spark which can cause a fire. To discharge static energy, it’s suggested to touch any metal part of your vehicle before pumping.

Can You Leave Your Engine On While Pumping Gas?

The general rule of thumb is to always turn off your engine while pumping gas. This is because gas is highly flammable, and any spark or ignition can be catastrophic.

However, technically, you can leave your car engine on while pumping gas.

"While you can, technically, keep your car on, there’s always a non-negligible risk: gasoline vapors can come in contact with static electricity, which can ignite a fire, ultimately leading to an explosion," per J.D. Power.

Over half of the fires that occurred at gas stations were initiated when static electricity came into contact with gas vapors that led to ignition, J.D. Power notes.

So while you technically can leave your vehicle running while pumping, there is a non-zero risk of fire or even explosion, which most people would agree means you should just turn the car off.
