This Citroën AX from 1988 has only 32 miles on the clock
This quasi-new car is for sale. But is that what you want?
Do old small cars have a lobby? It seems they have a very small one. The vast majority of old car fans concentrate on the well-known young and classic cars from BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and VW. What's more, the Corsa, Fiesta and Co. have all been used up in everyday life, which has been further exacerbated by heavy rust. This makes the find all the more pleasing.
The Retromobile classic car show in Paris is not only a general highlight in terms of chrome and sheet metal. It is, of course, a festival for all lovers of French marques, but the 2CV "duck" or the DS (which turns 70 this year) are also in the spotlight at Citroën. A simple AX, on the other hand, is almost a rarity.

Especially this unassuming five-door 1988 model. Its simplicity, typical of the AX in the early years, is immediately striking. Let's take a look back: The AX replaced the unfortunate Visa and Citroën LN subcompacts. The developers also took a look at the now completely outdated "duck". As with the 2CV, the motto was lightweight construction. The primary objective in the development of the AX was to create a small car with as much interior space as possible and as little weight as possible.
The basic version of the AX 10 E weighed only 640 kilograms because Citroën used lightweight materials, for example the lower part of the tailgate was made of plastic. The drag coefficient of 0.31 was unusually low for this class of car. High corrosion resistance was achieved by the use of galvanised sheet metal, plastic wheel arch liners and cavity sealing. The Citroën AX was built at the Aulnay-sous-Bois plant, north-east of Paris, from mid-1986 until the end of 1998. The body was fully automated.

So much for a brief excursion into model history. In front of us in Paris is an AX 10 RE. In 1988, this was the combination of the smallest engine (1.0 litre with 41 PS) and the second lowest level of equipment. It was 3.50 metres long, weighed 645 kg and cost a good 12,500 marks in Germany.
This new price can be converted almost 1:1 into euros in the case of the trade fair AX from Paris, with 11,500 euros on the price tag. The reason for this is the mileage of only 52 kilometres (32 miles). An old new car, so to speak. With an immaculate beige-brown interior. So only one question remains: do you want to drive it around at all?
