Stellantis eyes SUVs, off-roaders, and trucks with new STLA Frame platform
The body-on-frame type will be able to mount electric, extended range, petrol and hydrogen powertrains. Starting with Jeep and Ram
After the STLA Medium and STLA Large comes the STLA Frame, the new platform from Stellantis designed for future models coming in the next few years. An architecture whose name already anticipates the big difference from its sisters. It will be of the body-on-frame type.
A particular structure designed for SUVs, pickups, vans, and large off-road vehicles, with more than one eye on the US market, where the STLA Frame will make its debut in a few years to form the basis of models designed by Jeep and Ram.
The models
The new Stellantis platform will be destined for the Group's largest models, designed to accommodate lengths between 5.48 and 5.94 metres and wheelbases between 3.14 and 3.69 metres. Certainly not, therefore, for compact or medium SUVs such as those marketed in Europe. The first model to use it should be the Ram 1500 REV, an electric version of one of the bestselling Stellantis in the USA.
If the christening takes place on the other side of the Atlantic, an arrival in Europe is not ruled out, even if the Old Continent will not be the target market. The lion's share will be taken up by the aforementioned STLA Medium platform (the one used in the Peugeot 3008, 5008 and the upcoming Jeep Compass, just to give an example) and STLA Large, used for the first time by the new Dodge Charger Daytona and ready to make its debut with the new Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Giulia. The only thing missing is the STLA Small, which will replace the current CMP (of PSA origin) used by several of the Group's small cars such as the Peugeot 208, Opel Corsa, and Jeep Avenger.
The specifications
Looking at the technical specifications, as mentioned, the STLA Frame will be able to accommodate different types of powertrains. Not only electric, but also REEV (electric with range extender), combustion, electrified, and hydrogen. A multi-energy platform then, just like the others.
As far as electric cars are concerned, the new Stellantis platform envisages the possibility of mounting a motor on each axle, so that front-wheel, rear-wheel or all-wheel-drive models with up to 340 bhp each can be had. They will be powered by a liquid-cooled battery with 800-volt architecture and the capacity to accept 350 kW of maximum power when recharged, for a maximum range of almost 500 miles. Official figures say that the most powerful versions will be able to go from 0 to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds.
In the case of the presence of a combustion engine to recharge the batteries (thus an electric car with a range extender), the range will be up to 683 miles, while the batteries will have 400-volt architecture and a maximum recharging power of 175 kW. In both cases, the towing capacity will be 6,350 kg and the payload 1,224 kg.
