Italian furniture maker Poltrona Frau is selling two models of these pricey office chairs.
It takes a lot of hard work for someone to afford a Ferrari, and now the Prancing Horse is letting folks enjoy the feeling of being behind the wheel of one of its sports cars by creating the new Cockpit office chair. This seat comes from a partnership between the automaker and the famous Italian furniture company Poltrona Frau.
The Cockpit’s styling comes from the Ferrari Design Centre, and team leader Flavio Manzoni is responsible for recent models like the LaFerrari Aperta, GTC4Lusso and 812 Superfast. This seat wouldn’t look out of place in any of those models. The Cockpit is available in two versions: the President and the Executive. The high-back President interpretation looks like a racing seat. Alternatively, the Executive model has less obvious automotive inspiration and looks like a stylish take on Eames’ classic molded chair.
Ferrari claims that the chairs use the same materials as in the brand’s famous sports cars. The Cockpit’s exterior shell is available in either carbon or alutex – an aluminum glass fiber. A customization service means that buyers can order this seat in whatever color and material that they desire.
As you should expect from anything with styling by the Ferrari Design Centre, these seats aren’t cheap. The President costs 10,000 euros ($10,600 at current exchange rates), and the Executive goes for 7,500 euros ($8,000). They’re available at Poltrona Frau retailers starting in November or December. Ferrari spokesperson Jason Harris tells Motor1, “The distribution through Ferrari Store is still under discussion.”
The Prancing Horse’s longtime rival Porsche also offers its own seat. The Office Chair RS essentially takes a sport seat from the 911 Carrera GTS or GT3 and mounts it on a swiveling base. It even has an electrically adjustable backrest. The product is similarly expensive, though, at $6,750. A regular version goes for $5,690.

FERRARI AND POLTRONA FRAU PRESENT “COCKPIT”, THE NEW OFFICE CHAIR: PASSION FOR AUTOMOTIVE EXCELLENCE IN AN ARMCHAIR
Maranello, 7 aprile 2017 – Ferrari and Poltrona Frau present “Cockpit”, the first office chair ever designed by Ferrari Design Centre. Produced by Poltrona Frau, that has upholstered the interiors of Ferrari cars since the 80’s, it is neither a car seat nor a pure piece of furniture or design. It is a contemporary hybrid that brings together two brands, a blend of automotive know-how and the culture of living that celebrate the 70thanniversary of the Maranello carmaker. An office chair that captures the excitement, the speed of the driver’s seat, as well as the passion for racing.
The Cockpit is a place where concentration, quick reflexes and intuition join with a will to win. It is a space where the contact between the body and the seat creates dynamic sensations that help the driver to control the car as efficiently as possible. The armchair has an architectural and modular structure, and offers expansion possibilities. For the moment two versions are available: the President and the Executive. Both comprise a reclining base and seat, integrated with two different backrests. The President is the managerial model with a high backrest that is inspired by the ergonomics of competitive racing seats. The Executive model, a chair that adapts to all work contexts, has a deliberately low and narrow backrest to ensure more freedom of movement.
The design of “Cockpit" is a synthesis of automotive innovation and inspiration, the product of Ferrari’s 70 years of experience. Every element connects with the brand’s DNA, and the materials are the same as those used in Ferrari cars, like the external shell moulded from carbon or alutex. The central band on the seat takes its cue from racing seats, while the swivel device sports the same design and mechanical elements as the steering wheel.
For the leather upholstery, the Ferrari Design Centre team has chosen shades and finishes inspired by the trim of the three Tailor-Made service lines, which allow for the personalised configuration of the car: Scuderia, Classica and Inedita. Cockpit can also be customised in terms of its colours and materials.
