Consumer Reports Survey Says These Are The 10 Least Reliable Cars

Here’s hoping some of you in our Motor1 audience have thick skin, because Consumer Reports has announced its annual list of the least reliable cars and there are some pretty popular rides under the gun. There isn’t a specific manufacturer that stands out from the crowd, but there are a couple notable areas where vehicles seem to be failing. Of all the cars on the list, nearly every single one struggles with in-car electronics or power equipment. So yeah, those features we love can also be a real pain.

How does Consumer Reports determine the least reliable cars? Buyers fill out the magazine’s comprehensive survey that covers 17 specific areas, including everything from major mechanical components to aesthetic trim. That information is compiled and tweaked to provide something called a Predicted Reliability Score, which determines the cars that get the thumbs down.

Here they are, starting with the best of the worst.

Chevrolet Camaro

It may be a performance hero, but owners report minor transmission issues along with electronics and drive system problems.

Mercedes-Benz GLC Class

Stuttgart’s compact SUV struggles with brakes, steering, suspension, power equipment troubles. 

Jaguar F-Pace

This new crossover has teething problems in-car electronics, its drive system, and suffers from noises and leaks.

GMC Acadia

This is a popular three-row SUV, but like many others on this list, buyers report issues with in-car electronics, power equipment, and the drive system.

Fiat 500

Owners of the ultra-compact Fiat have problems with brakes, power equipment, and in-car electronics.

Ford Focus

Ford is the only automaker to have two cars on the list, drive system and transmission problems plaguing the Focus.

Ford Fiesta

Fiesta owners report climate system problems as well as transmission woes.

Volvo XC90

This popular luxury SUV looks great and is rich with features, but owners have reported issues with those features as well as the electrical system.

Cadillac Escalade

The big Caddy is a let-down for some owners because of power equipment problems, climate system woes, and major transmission issues.

Tesla Model X

We didn’t expect to see the Model X listed as the least reliable vehicle, but owners tell Consumer Reports that it has problems with paint, trim, the climate system, and body hardware.
