Ford has set a new Nürburgring lap record with the GT Mk IV, achieving a time of 6 minutes and 15.977 seconds. This accomplishment makes Ford the fastest American automaker around the iconic track. The GT Mk IV, a track-only vehicle in the Prototype class, surpassed the previous record set by the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X, which clocked in at 6 minutes and 49.275 seconds.
The GT Mk IV is now the fastest car powered exclusively by an internal combustion engine and ranks as the third-fastest overall at the Nürburgring. It trails only the electric Volkswagen ID.R, which completed the lap in 6 minutes and 5.335 seconds, and the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo race car, with a time of 5 minutes and 19.546 seconds. This achievement highlights Ford’s engineering prowess in creating a high-performance vehicle capable of competing with top-tier electric and hybrid cars.
Introduced in 2022, the GT Mk IV is the most extreme, track-only version of the Ford GT. It features a custom carbon-fiber Multimatic chassis, a longer wheelbase, a long-tail body, and enhanced aerodynamics that generate over 2,400 pounds of downforce at 150 miles per hour. The vehicle is powered by a bespoke twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter EcoBoost V6 engine producing more than 820 horsepower, significantly more than the road-going GT’s 660-hp 3.5-liter unit. Each GT Mk IV is priced at approximately $1.7 million, with Ford opening the order books for the remaining units last August.
