Is Buick Bringing Back The Sedan? Here's Everything We Know
With GM's new Alpha 2 platform on the way, it could spawn a rear-wheel-drive Buick sedan. Here's what we know.
General Motors is getting back into the sedan game. By the end of 2027, the automaker will begin production of a new Cadillac CT5 on a platform expected to underpin a range of new models, including a reborn Camaro. Part of that strategy also includes a Buick sedan.
GM is said to be making "multiple variants" of its new platform, with at least two sedans expected. One is the next-generation CT5, while the other is mostly a mystery, but it should arrive wearing a Buick badge.
The brand does not sell a single sedan right now, discontinuing the LaCrosse after the 2019 model year and the Regal after 2020. However, it appears there’s a shift among consumers toward more cars rather than trucks or SUVs, which this new Buick could capitalize on.
We won’t know for sure what GM has planned until they reveal their new products, but this is everything we know about the Buick sedan so far.
What Will Buick Call It?
Buick Electra Orbit Concept
Buick’s entire lineup is packed with model names that begin with the letter "E," and we wouldn’t expect anything less for this new sedan. The automaker filed a trademark for the Electra name in 2025, which it uses in China on a range of new-energy vehicles.
Buick could use it here in the United States, and it might hint at the powertrain underneath, even though we wouldn’t expect a fully electric variant anytime soon. Electra is a name Buick has used before, debuting in 1959, with production lasting through 1990.
The Electra seems like an obvious choice, but GM could surprise us with something completely different. The dictionary is the limit.
What Platform Will It Ride On?
The new Buick sedan will ride on GM's updated Alpha 2 platform, which will underpin the next Cadillac CT5 and the upcoming seventh-generation Camaro. The platform is expected to retain the architecture’s rear-wheel-drive configuration.

What Will Power It?
The powertrain lineup for Buick’s sedan is a mystery. The platform will be capable of accommodating a range of powertrains, including V8s, but with Cadillac readying a new CT5, the Buick might pack something unique to differentiate it.
We expect the Buick will pack a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, likely the LSY that powers several GM models, including the current CT5. It makes 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque in the sedan.
While the V8 will fit, we wouldn’t be surprised if the top engine was the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that makes up to 360 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque in the CT5-V. It would separate it from the Camaro and any potential future CT5-V Blackwing offering.
Buick could also heavily rely on hybrid powertrains and feature some form of electrification.
What Will It Look Like?
Buick Sedan Rendering By Motor1
Buick doesn’t offer any sedans in the United States, but it does in China, where it has had some striking designs. Our rendering depicts the brand’s new model with a sharp nose, a gaping lower intake, and sleek headlights largely inspired by those vehicles.
At the back, the car features a short rear deck, a small trunk spoiler, and quad exhaust tips that sit below an aggressive—for Buick—diffuser. Inside, we expect the sedan to have at least two screens and Super Cruise capability.
When Will It Debut?
We could see Buick’s new sedan as early as this year. Production for the next-generation Cadillac CT5, riding on the updated platform, is expected to begin in the fall of 2027. Whether Buick will start building its sedan at the same time remains to be seen, but we doubt production will start much later than that.
If production does begin next fall, Buick’s sedan could be on sale as soon as late 2027 or early 2028.

How Much Will It Cost?
If Buick launches a new sedan, we expect it to be somewhat affordable. The automaker’s current lineup starts at just over $25,000 for 2026 and tops out with the Enclave, which starts at around $47,000, so we doubt it will be more than $50,000.
If it is sharing a platform with Cadillac, GM won’t want it to be too expensive and compete with the new CT5, so we expect the new Buick to undercut. The 2026 CT5 is a $50,000 sedan, so we wouldn’t be surprised if a Buick sedan starts in the mid-$30,000 range, but it could be higher or lower.
