'Please Don’t Tell Me:' Driver Gets Out of Car. Then He Sees Something That Almost Gives Him a Heart Attack From ‘BMW Trauma’
"Happened to me right after I changed my oil, thought I was cooked."
A BMW driver nearly had a heart attack from “BMW Trauma” after seeing what was underneath his car.
In a TikTok that’s generated over 1.6 million views as of this writing, BMW enthusiast @1stock440 shares how he discovered liquid underneath his car that caused some panic.
What Is Leaking Underneath the Car?
The BMW driver shuts his passenger door only to realize that there is liquid pooling underneath his car.
“Oh my god, please don't tell me,” the BMW driver begins.
The driver continues to observe his BMW by checking out what’s going on underneath. While underneath the car, he discovers the source of the leak and believes it to be just water.
“OK, that looks like water. It’s just clean water; it’s OK,” he continues to reassure himself. The dripping water is believed to be from the A/C.
“Nah for a second I had a heart attack I just came back from driving it,” @1stock440 captions the video. In an on-screen caption, he added, “BMW trauma is REAL.”
After concluding the leak underneath the car was just water, the BMW driver walked away from the car feeling relieved.
Commenters understood the trigger the BMW driver faced when discovering the water pooling underneath his car.
“I keep getting it, ‘your cars leaking’ bro it’s AC chill,” one TikTok commenter said.
"It's just the ac bro," another shared.
“Happened to me a few days ago..yup BMW trauma is real,” a third replied.
What Is “BMW Trauma”?
BMW hasn’t earned the best reputation when it comes to manufacturing cars without leaks, including oil and coolant leaks. So, when a BMW driver sees any sort of leak, they may become triggered.
“Is a BMW supposed to leak oil? No …is it regular for BMWs to leak oil? Yes,” one Reddit user shared.
According to Driven Auto Care, BMW engines can be complex and have become susceptible to oil leaks due to their design and the materials used. These oil leaks can occur due to aging rubber components, seals, and gaskets, especially with older models.
“Oh my god I know this very well. I replaced my entire coolant system, radiator, hoses, water pump etc. Every [expletive] thing I had enough,” one TikTok commenter shared.
BMWs are also known to have issues with coolant leaks, Endurance Warranty reports. The cooling system is responsible for absorbing heat from the engine, preventing it from overheating. The cooling system uses a network of hoses and a water pump to do this.
When coolant levels are low, the engine isn’t functioning properly and can overheat.
Possible signs of a coolant leak include low coolant level, overheating engine, visible coolant accumulation, a sweet smell from the engine bay, and steam or white smoke from the exhaust.
Being on top of coolant levels can prevent significant engine damage and keep repair costs lower.
What Should You Do If Your Car Is Leaking Water?
“Water pooling under your car is usually condensation from the air conditioning system,” Motorwerks BMW states.
Additionally, if water is below your tailpipe, it’s most likely from exhaust condensation. Now, if you are seeing this water by the tailpipe accompanied by white smoke, there may be a blown gasket.
The color of the liquid comes into play when trying to figure out what is leaking. Here is what the fluid color may tell you about your leak:
- Red: Power steering or transmission fluid.
- Brown: Engine oil or brake fluid when dark. Gear lubricant when lighter.
- Orange: Coolant from the radiator or transmission fluid.
- Yellow or Yellow-Orange: Radiator coolant.
- Pink: Newer transmission fluid or power steering fluid.
- Blue: Windshield wiper fluid.
- Green: Coolant or windshield wiper fluid that hasn’t made it to the radiator.
