Woman Gets 'Temu Range Rover.' She Says It's 'Better' than the Real Thing
"I drive an Omoda which is the same company and honestly they are such elite cars for the price!!"
There’s a reason people shell out tens of thousands of dollars more for luxury vehicles rather than something “more sensible,” something “easier to repair,” or something that doesn’t require synthetic oil changes in the range of $250 to $500 every 3,000 miles.
The reason is the feeling.
Craftsmanship, details, and power are three of the most alluring aspects of driving a luxury car—and that’s leaving out the show-offy impulse to whip an exclusive ride into the valet parking lane. Not to mention, small perks like cooled seats and walnut paneling.
So, the attempt to find something easier on the pocketbook, but visually prestigious and as much fun to drive, is pretty understandable.
Enter the Jaecoo 7, a Chinese SUV that is clearly built to appeal to the Range Rover set. That is to say, TikToker @bec.tttoktok bought the Jaecoo 7, which she refers to as the “Temu Range Rover,” and, so far, has no regrets.
In an on-screen caption, she quotes others as saying, “Are you gonna keep going on and on about your temu range rover being better than the real thing?” followed by an eye roll emoji. Her response? “OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER,” she writes, accompanied by an emoji with its tongue hanging out.
Viewers seem to back her up. “From someone with an Evoque I absolutely love this and might go swap mine for one [crying-laughing emoji] it looks unreal [heart eyes emoji],” one wrote.
A second said, “From a previous owner of a Range Rover emphasizing PREVIOUS, you came out on top for sure! Had nothing but problems out of mine since the day I got it, plus this is way cuter in my opinion for half the cost.”
On its website, the Jaecoo 7 with All Wheel Drive starts at €37,900 ($44,160.66). A similar vehicle from Range Rover starts at £44,380 ($59,558.48).
What Is the J7?
The Jaecoo 7 is built by the company Omoda, which is the SUV specialty group in the Chery International company. The state-owned Chery is the fourth-largest carmaker in China.
And according to one TikTok comment, it is also a “cousin” to Range Rover itself: “The parent company of jaecoo is chery which has a 50% stake in Jaguar Land Rover. So probably that’s why the J7 has some styling of the RR.”
However, this isn’t exactly correct. According to its website, “Chery Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Co., Ltd. is a 50:50 independent joint venture formed between Chinese auto manufacturer Chery Automotive Co., Ltd. and UK auto manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover.”
In a previous video, @bec.tttoktok shows off the aesthetics of her hybrid J7. Its soft boxy style with an oversized grille does conjure the Range Rover Evoque. A peek inside showcases an oversized touchscreen, a cooled center console, and a voice-activated panoramic sunroof.
Performance, according to Autotrader UK, is one area where it doesn’t seem to hold up. Scoring a two out of a possible five, the site notes, “no Jaecoo 7 is a quick Jaecoo 7, and nor are the petrol engines especially quiet. Laggy accelerator response in both engine setups [hybrid and petrol] make the car feel quite sluggish, albeit, if you’re never in a hurry it’s never really an issue. And, ultimately, you’re getting [what] you pay for.”
For @bec.tttoktok, though, the comfort is worth it. “I’m so used to driving cars that are, like, all about more, like, performance than comfort, and now, this is a very comfortable car,” she says in the July 1 video exploring the car’s features.
Though it might never be asked to traverse the Yungas Road in Bolivia (the Death Road), a la “Top Gear,” December 2009, it’s a safe guess that it can make a commuter run. Though the reviews on the performance and possible longevity of the vehicle differ wildly, with a seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty, it might be worth taking a chance, or at least worth taking a test drive. Either way, people are curious. Across three TikTok videos about the vehicle, @bec.tttoktok got over 765,000 views.
The Jaecoo 7 is currently not available in the United States.
