Milton Keynes man gets surprise Christmas gift from China
Yup, it's exactly what you think it is.
Milton Keynes resident James Horan is rolling into the holidays with a grin wider than Santa's after snagging a brand-new BYD Dolphin as part of an electric car giveaway. The big win came courtesy of a BYD campaign that encouraged would-be eco-drivers to test drive one of their futuristic rides.
“I’m absolutely thrilled! What an incredible Christmas present!” Horan gushed. An EV enthusiast since 2021, Horan is no stranger to the electric lifestyle, but even he admits that the Dolphin is a shiny upgrade to his seasonal festivities.

The compact EV boasts quirky design, practicality, and decent EV tech. It’s an all-electric hatchback designed to make going green as fun as a holiday lights display, and with a starting price of £26,195, it’s not just for those on Santa’s “rich list.”
The campaign for the Dolphin, which ran from 1 September to 19 November, didn’t skimp on the prizes. BYD dangled everything from JBL wireless speakers to weekend test drives of the car to sweeten the pot. For Horan, who just wanted to test drive a BYD, it was the jackpot: a full-on ownership of the EV.
But wait, there’s more. Along with the car, Horan received a Shell Recharge card, giving him access to over 700,000 charging points across Europe, including lamppost-friendly Ubitricity points scattered across UK cities. That’s enough juice to power him through the holidays and beyond, all while enjoying discounts on rapid and ultra-rapid charging.
The Shell-BYD partnership, forged in March 2023, aims to make electric driving easier and more accessible. Judging by Horan’s excitement, it’s working.
“BYD is committed to making electric motoring accessible to everyone. The BYD Dolphin is a fantastic car – well-equipped, stylish, and, most importantly, available at a price point that makes electric driving a reality for many. We’re delighted for Mr. Horan and wish him many happy miles in his brand-new BYD Dolphin,” Steve Beattie, Sales and Marketing Director at BYD UK, commented.
