Tonke converts the VW ID. Buzz into a 5-passenger electric camper van
The Dutch specialist adds a practical drop-down roof that houses a large bed for three.
Whether we like it or not, the world of camping on board a vehicle will inevitably be dominated by electric vans or motorhomes in the future. What may at first be a cause for concern has, over time, become certainty, thanks to the work of specialists like Tonke.
In case you don't know them, these guys, based in the Netherlands, carry out transformations on series models, such as the Volkswagen ID. Buzz seen here, to convert it into a practical camper van with a folding roof for five occupants. In this way, in just 4.95 metres in length, you will have a vehicle to take the family around the city on a daily basis or to enjoy unforgettable weekends in the countryside.

Range, one of the key points of this type of electric vehicle, is not a problem. The Tonke ID. Buzz is equipped with a battery pack that gives it a practical range of up to 265 miles so you can reach your destination effortlessly and without worrying about the battery.
The Tonke ID.Buzz is available in two versions: the ID.Buzz Trail and the ID.Buzz Explorer. Both models offer the same premium quality and comfort, but with their own character for different adventures. The ID.Buzz Trail is perfect for the active adventurer, while the ID.Buzz Explorer allows you to travel in luxury.
The technical detail of the Tonke camper is not 100% new. We're talking about the roof tent, which instead of the typical wedge design, in this case, folds out to the side. Thus, inside the ID. Buzz gains extra headroom, there is a bed on the side for three people and on the outside there is a kind of small porch to shelter from the sun or rain.
Inside, space is limited, but customers have an integrated 35-litre fridge, plus a kitchen module with sink and induction hob, which can be used both inside and outside, thanks to an extendable structure. The rear seats convert into a practical bed for two adults when folded down at night, so this ID. Buzz can sleep up to 5 people, which is not bad at all.
For those who opt for the Explorer version, it should be noted that the fold-out kitchen module is located at the rear. Tonke has designed and created extendable drawers that hold everything you need to 'survive' for a few days in the middle of nowhere. The advantage of this system is that it frees up more space in the rear seats, although it means that you always have to cook outside (although you are protected from the rain, for example, by the tailgate, which acts as a roof).
Finally, let's talk about prices. And although Tonke seems to still be putting the finishing touches to the lift-off roof and the ID. Buzz Explorer, it already offers the Explorer's base price list, which starts at €62,500 (approx. £52,000). For the optional roof lift, you'll have to pay a further €9,500 (£7,900) including installation. The ID. Buzz Trail starts at €47,600 (£39,600), although all these prices are exclusive of VAT. And be aware that Tonke also has products based on other products such as Mercedes-Benz, so you might want to take a look at their online configurator (link below).
