Callum Skye: Now there are pictures of the interior

A year ago, the British design and engineering firm Callum unveiled the Skye, an unusual electric off-roader with free-standing wheels. At the time, there were only pictures of the exterior, but now photos of the interior have been added. It is unusually luxurious for an off-road vehicle, but only the road version will be so luxurious as the off-road version will be more robust.

According to chief designer Aleck Jones, the sophisticated design and high-quality materials clearly set it apart from the competition. The aim was for "the interior to be simple, but not simplistic". Jones was aiming for "a light, airy and sophisticated feel" in the 2+2-seater cabin.

The pictures also show the three-door from the outside, in a bright orange colour. This is complemented by door frames in matt "gunmetal grey". The design is characterised by the longitudinal bar that bisects the doors. This look was taken up for the interior: Here, the doors are also halved, albeit by a white bar. The majority of the interior is also kept in white. There are also metallic details on the steering wheel and in the centre console.

"We had demanding weight specifications to fulfil, so we used lightweight solutions wherever possible without compromising the feeling of luxury," says interior designer Charlotte Jones. To reduce the weight, the prototype also has body parts made of a flax composite material with "bio-resin". It is not yet clear whether this solution will also be used for the production version.

There is a slim metal structure in the centre of the cabin with a small touchscreen above it. You can see that space had to be saved, as the cabin is probably not very wide. The white sports seats look narrow, obviously offer good lateral support and have integrated headrests. They are upholstered in fine "Bridge of Weir" leather.

There is a removable rear bench that is only suitable for children - as mentioned, the Skye is a 2+2-seater. The white leather is complemented by accents in orange. This colour is used for the leather opening loops in the doors, the glove compartment and the trim elements on the steering wheel. The seats also have orange-coloured double stitching.

The Callum Skye has a 42 kWh battery for a range of around 270 kilometres. There is no information on the drive system yet, but one can probably assume all-wheel drive. Performance is also likely to be high, as the car should be able to complete the standard sprint in less than four seconds. The Skye is 4,047 mm long, 1,900 mm wide and weighs 1,150 kilos. 

It is available in two versions, a "dynamic" version for on-road use and an off-road version for off-road use. The latter will also have a robust, hard-wearing interior, which is not due to be unveiled until 2025. Prices are between £80,000 and £110,000; the Skye is available to order now.

The bottom line

The Callum Skye is significantly more individual than an electric G-Class, and also significantly cheaper. However, this does not apply to the interior, which comes with fine white leather. At least in the on-road version; the off-road version will probably be more robust inside, and probably also cost less.
