Ford X-1000, the supersonic car that wanted to preview the future
Launched in the mid-1950s, the X-1000 was inspired by jets and was supposed to preview the styling of the new Fords.
How did the Americans of the 1950s imagine the future of the car? A clear example was the Ford X-1000. Presented in 1957, this concept had the clear objective of showing the public what the Ford of the successor years would look like.
A real promise with regard to the styling and solutions thought up (also) for the passenger compartment, with a strong influence from the world of aeronautics.
Directly from the world of jets
Like many American models of the time, in fact, the design of this prototype was inspired by supersonic jets. The references are evident especially if you look at the car's silhouette, with aerodynamic sides, fairing wheels and rear fins (which can be retracted manually) that look almost like wings.
The Ford was envisaged as a versatile model, capable of accommodating a front or rear engine, depending on engineering requirements. Moreover, when presenting the concept at the Detroit and Chicago shows, the company admitted that it would influence future models.
Vintage accessories
Indeed, according to Ford, many of the solutions conceived for the X-1000 were designed for mass production. Among them, the concept featured a retractable roof to transform the car into a cabriolet and facilitate on-board access.
The cabin - of which we were unable to recover official photos, unfortunately - had a three-seat configuration, with the driver sitting in front of the two rear seats. Definitely 1950s accessories for those in the back seat, such as a real TV, a miniature phonograph, and a horizontal bar positioned at chest height to improve safety in the event of an accident. After all, safety belts were considered the stuff of science fiction at the time.
Unfortunately, the X-1000 did not see the light of day and only a few dashboard knobs were reused of all the accessories, which found their way onto later Fords.
