According to a new report, Mercedes-Benz will soon offer the 9G-TRONIC gearbox for the S-Class Coupe.
Starting January 2015, the 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission will allegedly be offered for the S-Class Coupe but only on the S500 version featuring a rear-wheel drive layout. The auto 'box will be in charge of sending the 455 PS (335 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) generated by a V8 4.7-liter engine to the rear axle.
Lighter than the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic gearbox, the nine-speed made its debut on the 2014 E350 BlueTEC last year and can work with RWD and 4MATIC layouts as well as in plug-in hybrid and full hybrid cars. Even though it has two more gears, it has just about the same size as the seven-speed transmission and can handle up to 1,000 Nm (737 lb-ft).
It should be mentioned Mercedes-Benz is also offering the 9G-TRONIC for the recently facelifted CLS lineup (CLS 220 BlueTEC, CLS 250 BlueTEC, CLS 350 BlueTEC or CLS 500).
