Widebody VW Scirocco R tuned to 430hp by China's Aspec
This kit for Scirocco owners who like a lot of attention – not all of it necessarily positive.
The current Volkswagen Scirocco has an uncertain future, but Aspec, a tuner from China, is showing the three-door can still look mean by offering a widebody kit for the aging model. The firm can also tune the sporty vehicle up to 430 horsepower (321 kilowatts) but doesn’t offer any details about the mods that make the output increase possible.
Aspec’s kit overhauls the Scirocco’s design. There’s a completely new front clip with a row of massive intakes. The piece also connects to wider fenders that are 2 inches (50 millimeters) broader than stock. The company completes the facelift with a new hood that has two U-shaped heat extractors and carbon fiber mirror caps.
The new side sills gradually grow outward to the wider rear fenders that are 2.6 inches (70 mm) bigger than stock. The back end features a massive diffuser and equally large wing. A set of quad exhausts fill out the big outlets on this example.
Aspec offers the parts in carbon fiber or fiberglass and has specific components that fit the pre- and post-refresh Scirocco. The tuner claims that the design comes from its experience in the China Touring Car Championship, but we think this kit is more about grabbing attention than lowering lap times.
A report from 2013 hints that the next-gen Scirocco might arrive in 2017, but that story comes from before the automaker’s billions of dollars in costs from its global diesel emissions scandal. This now looks far less certain. Now, VW has a bigger emphasis on crossovers and EVs than building sporty vehicles. In addition, the Scirocco continues to ride on an aging chassis while the Golf, its former platform mate, now has more modern underpinnings and has a refresh on the way. The automaker hasn’t pulled the plug yet, so it hasn’t lost complete faith in the sporty vehicle.
