The debut of the Volkswagen Tanoak concept at the New York Auto Show was a welcomed surprise. Not only is it handsome and rugged, but considering it rides on the same platform as the production Atlas SUV, it gives us an clue as to the range of possibilities for the full-size vehicle moving forward.

But this isn’t VW’s first pickup truck – not by far. The German marque has been building trucks and utes, both concepts and production models, since the early 1950s. It wasn’t until nearly 60 years after the first German utility vehicle was built that we finally saw a "conventional" truck in the form of the European Amarok. With that in mind, let’s take a look back at some of the wildest, most wonderful pickup truck concepts VW has produced.
