See The Evolution Of Skoda's Steering Wheels Throughout The Years

Skoda's first car was made in 1905, back when the company was still called Laurin & Klement after its founding members, Václav Laurin and Václav Klement. Being one of the oldest car manufacturers in the business, it goes without saying the Czech marque has come up with its fair share of steering wheel designs over the past 112 years of car production.

Not only has the steering wheel’s design gone through substantial changes, but its functionality has also been overhauled from the original Laurin & Klement Voiturette A to the latest Skoda Octavia RS. We are also able to catch a glimpse of how it will evolve in the next years courtesy of the Vision E concept looking into the future of the Volkswagen-owned brand.

We all know that the steering wheel will ultimately perish as sooner or later we will all become passengers in our own cars. Fully autonomous vehicles will take over, maybe not in our lifetimes, but when these will eventually arrive, the steering wheel is going to be rendered obsolete. With Skoda being a member of the VW Group, the company will have access to the driverless tech of the high-ranked members of the wealthy family and will forgo the steering wheel at some point.

Until then, models such as the Octavia RS 230 and RS 245 will continue to provide the most direct connection between the person behind the steering wheel and the car.
