Man Owns Viral Auto Shop. Then He Goes Viral For Another Reason—His Interaction With This Single Mother: 'People Cannot Believe'
'That is NOT what I expected.'
The owner of a Georgia auto repair shop is receiving widespread praise after a video resurfaced showing him helping a struggling single mother who couldn’t afford to fix her car.
Global Mind Apparel (@globalmindapparel) shared the story in May, highlighting an act of kindness by Sherwood Cooke Jr., owner of Royalty Auto Service in Camden, Georgia. The video has since been viewed more than 787,000 times. A copy of the video is also pinned to Cooke’s TikTok account, where it has more than 2.5 million views.
“He’s going viral all because of the way he treated this single mother,” the narrator says.
According to Global Mind Apparel, Annette Morales bought a used car that soon began having problems. Looking for an honest opinion, she brought it to Royalty Auto Service.
The video says Morales told Cooke she didn’t have much money for repairs and wasn’t even sure all of the work was necessary.
Cooke reportedly told her he would hold onto the car for a few days.
When Morales returned, she expected to pick up an estimate. Instead, Cooke told her he had fixed “everything that was wrong with that car” and didn’t charge her anything for the repairs.
The surprise didn’t end there.
According to the video, Cooke and his son also launched a GoFundMe for Morales that ultimately raised more than $160,000 to help her “get back on her feet.”
The video shows Morales breaking down in tears before hugging Cooke.
“This is truly life-changing for her,” the narrator says. “Shout out to Sherwood.”
The Story Didn’t End With Free Repairs
The TikTok retelling of Cooke and Morales’s interaction certainly tells the broad strokes, but the situation was even more complicated than a shop owner simply waiving a repair bill.
According to the fundraiser Cooke launched and local news reports covering the shop owner’s act of kindness, Morales brought her 2010 GMC Terrain to Royalty Auto Service after another shop told her the SUV needed a new engine. She was looking for a second opinion because she couldn’t afford a major repair.
After inspecting the vehicle, Cooke said his team found multiple problems. The SUV had severe engine issues and failing wheel bearings, among other more serious concerns. While the vehicle wasn’t worth investing thousands of dollars into, they repaired the wheel bearings and replaced the tires so Morales could continue driving it safely in the short term.
Cooke also said Morales had paid roughly $15,000 for the used SUV—well above what he believed it was worth—and had purchased a warranty that he claimed wouldn’t cover even the failed wheel bearings because another shop had determined the engine needed replacing.
That’s when the shop decided to do more than fix the car and raise money for Morales, who has two daughters, one of whom was starting college when the story first went viral.
Cooke and his son started a GoFundMe to help Morales replace the vehicle and catch up financially. The fundraiser quickly blew past its original goal, eventually raising more than $180,000.
In updates posted to the campaign, Cooke said the money would help Morales purchase a newer, more reliable vehicle, build an emergency fund, and even put money toward a down payment on a home.
‘We Need More People Like Him’
The story resonated with viewers, many of whom said they hoped Cooke’s generosity would inspire others.
“I watched this entire series!” one commenter wrote. “I love Sherwood and his son; shop…. They are good people!!!!”
Others said they’d happily support the business after hearing Morales’ story.
“Everybody needs to start using that auto service company, those are good people. Love this story,” one person wrote.
“Great guy! Go follow him,” another added.
Several viewers said the video was a reminder that there are still people willing to help others when they need it most.
“This just proves that there still are good people out there! Thank you,” one commenter wrote.
“That’s the America I live in in my mind,” another said.
“That story just kicked my [expletive]. Good man in a world like today? Kudos,” another viewer wrote.
Others hoped the story would continue reaching new audiences.
“This positivity needs to fester and spread, big shout,” one person commented.
“Thank you for putting this on blast,” another wrote.
