Mobile Mechanic Charges Woman $100 To Fix Audi. Then She Realizes He Might Have Price-Gouged Her: 'I Charge Minimum $100'

It’s funny how quickly people forget about how valuable experience and convenience are in the world of auto repairs. But we see that dynamic playing out in a TikTok clip that focuses on a tiny piece of stamped metal that costs less than a fast-casual lunch but sparked a surprisingly fierce debate.

At issue in the video from creator AutoQueen (@autoqueen98) is whether a mobile mechanic was out of line in charging an Audi owner $100 to diagnose and fix a rattling noise she'd been living with for months. As grateful as the Los Angeles-area motorist was, viewers had plenty of opinions about why the mechanic should’ve charged less.

$100 Audi Retainer Clip Fix

The clip, which has been viewed more than 70,000 times, starts with the customer explaining that the noise from her front driver-side wheel only shows up when the Audi is moving. Sitting at a stoplight or waiting at a stop sign, everything sounds normal.

She says another shop had taken the car for a drive and suggested the culprit might be a wheel bearing, but she'd decided to live with the mystery rather than chase what could've turned into an expensive repair.

The mobile mechanic doesn't seem convinced. Kneeling beside the front wheel, he notices something missing almost immediately.

"On this side, there's supposed to be a clip right here that holds the brake from the stops," he says, pointing toward the brake assembly through his camera glasses. "It's called an anti-rattle clip."

He compares it to the opposite side of the car, where the small metal retainer is still in place. Then comes the moment that turned a straightforward repair into TikTok debate fodder.

"I charge minimum $100 for simple stuff like that," he says. "So it would just be $100 and then whatever that little thing cost, probably like $5."

Rather than haggle or hesitate, the Audi owner agrees almost instantly.

To her, the value proposition appears pretty simple: a noise that's nagged her for months had finally been diagnosed, and she had an answer before she'd even finished her conversation in the driveway.

Not everyone watching thought the arrangement sounded nearly as fair, since the clips cost $5 at most at popular auto parts retailers.

However, the mobile mechanic's labor rate fits right into the national average. According to Thumbtack, "The national average cost for mobile brake service typically ranges from $107-$259 ... Your final price depends on your vehicle type, brake condition, and local labor rates."

"100 bucks for a simple $5 clip.... could have charged 50," one commenter argued, earning more than 140 likes from viewers who focused less on the diagnosis and more on the math.

For them, the value equation hinged almost entirely on the belief that a part with an almost negligible price and a repair that took only minutes shouldn't command a triple-digit bill.

But plenty of viewers rushed to the mechanic's defense.

"If it was that simple, she woulda found the problem," one person wrote.

"You do it for $50 then," another replied.

"It's what you know not the time or the difficulty," added a third.

Mobile Mechanics: Convenience Comes With A Cost

Others noted that the Audi owner wasn't paying for a brake clip so much as a house call, a diagnosis that had eluded another shop, and the convenience of having the problem solved in her own driveway.

"As a business person u gotta put a value on your knowledge and time," one commenter wrote.

"It's not about simple things you don't understand minimum means just to show up," another added.

Several viewers also pointed out that the mechanic himself had framed the alternative in much starker terms, suggesting a wheel bearing repair at a dealership could have run well into four figures.

"Dealer would have been over $100," one commenter wrote.

Thumbtack states, "Mobile brake service can sometimes cost slightly more than going to a traditional shop, but the difference often depends on the provider and your location. The added cost usually reflects the convenience of having a pro come to you, saving you time, towing fees, or the hassle of waiting at a shop." However, it adds that prices for mobile brake services are often competitive with brick-and-mortar shops.

The irony is that the mechanic may have created his own controversy by being transparent. He showed the customer the exact nature of the problem, explained that the replacement part would cost about $5, disclosed his minimum charge before doing the work, and let her decide whether it was worth it.

From a more favorable angle, you could argue that his criticism from other would-be mechanics came with appreciation from potential future customers who appreciated his honesty and no-drama approach.

In many professions, people readily pay for expertise that makes a complicated problem look simple. Auto repair, however, comes with a long history of sticker shock and suspicion that makes even an honest invoice ripe for second-guessing.

Near the end of the clip, after the rattling noise disappears, the Audi owner marvels that the solution turned out to be "something so small." TikTok may never agree on whether the mechanic charged too much for a $5 clip. The woman who paid the bill, meanwhile, got her problem solved and found a mobile mechanic she'd already said she'd call again.
