Man Buys Mercedes Sedan. Then It Keeps Having This Oddly Specific Malfunction: ‘My C300 Always Did This’
"Stop it!"
A man says he’s dealing with a frustrating car problem after his truck started opening on its own, and he can’t figure out what’s causing it.
User @bemzotoast, who says he’s based in Connecticut, shared the bizarre issue he’s been experiencing with his sedan.
“My truck won’t stop opening,” he wrote in the text overlay of his clip.
“Guys, I’m not even [expletive] joking,” @bemzotoast says.
In the video, he closes the trunk and watches it stay shut, which only seems to frustrate him further. “Oh, now you don’t want to do it?” he says.
He then shows his keys in his hand to prove he’s not accidentally hitting the button to release the trunk. But when he gets into the driver’s seat, the trunk opens by itself again.
“Stop it!” @bemzotoast yells at the car. In the caption of his clip, he turned to viewers for advice on what to do.
“Help,” he wrote. As of this writing, the video has garnered more than 13.8 million views.
Why Won’t A Trunk Stay Closed?
While @bemzotoast’s car seemed to have a mind of its own, there are a few reasons a trunk might keep opening after someone closes it.
One of the first things drivers should check is whether something is accidentally triggering the trunk release. On some vehicles, that could be the key fob, a button inside the car, or even a hands-free trunk feature if the vehicle has one.
If that is not the problem, the issue could be a broken trunk latch. A latch that is jammed, damaged, or misaligned may make it seem like the trunk is closed before it pops open again.
According to Car Parts, the striker, which is the piece the latch grabs onto when the trunk closes, can also create problems if it is out of alignment. Even a small shift can prevent the latch from properly locking into place.
Drivers can also check for simpler issues first, like something blocking the trunk from closing all the way.
For people with electric cars, the problem may also be, well ... electrical. A faulty sensor or wiring issue can sometimes cause the system to behave unexpectedly.
If the problem keeps happening, it is worth getting checked out. A trunk that opens unexpectedly is annoying, of course, but it can also become a safety issue if it happens while driving or leaves belongings unsecured.
People Blame The Car
Commenters who watched @bemzotoast’s video were entertained by the timing of the Mercedes-Benz trunk opening and joked that the car appeared to have a mind of its own.
“Did you see it?!” one person asked.
Several viewers pointed out that the trunk conveniently stayed closed while @bemzotoast stood behind the car, only to reopen when he walked away.
“What?! No! He’s guilty! Look at his guilty little face! GUILTY I say! GUILTY! GUILTY! GUILTY!” one commenter joked.
“Coincident?” another questioned.
“I think NOT,” someone else responded.
Others were focused on the moment the trunk opened after @bemzotoast got back into the driver’s seat.
“Right as I’m sitting down!” one viewer wrote.
Some joked about the frustration of trying to prove a problem that suddenly disappears once someone else is watching.
“My car, whenever I go to the mechanic, and the noise I heard no longer appears until I leave the mechanic,” one person said.
“Me, whenever I bring up an issue to literally anyone,” another added.
“Me when I’m sick as hell for days and finally decide to go to the doctor, and suddenly I’m cured the day of the appointment,” a third viewer wrote.
Others continued joking about the car seemingly acting on its own.
“Your car rage baiting you is hilarious,” one commenter wrote.
