BYD is teasing its answer to the Rolls-Royce Ghost. The Yangwang Altior, a flagship sedan previously known only by its codename "HU," will make its public debut on November 5 in Dubai, aiming squarely at the world's most expensive sedans.

Yangwang general manager Hu Xiaoqing has linked the Altior name to a promise of going upmarket. Altior comes from the Latin word for "higher," a fitting label for a car BYD is positioning above its own U8 and U9 flagships.

That Dubai setting is deliberate as the Middle East is one of the Rolls-Royce Ghost's strongest markets. BYD appears to want its new sedan photographed on the same streets before it reaches China or Europe.

Dubai Debut And Confirmed Positioning

BYD has released only a teaser image and short video so far, but the details it shows are deliberate. The Altior wears a roof-mounted lidar sensor, large chrome wheels, and rear-hinged rear doors, the kind of coach door setup typically reserved for the most expensive sedans on sale.

Its front-end styling borrows visibly from the Yangwang U8, the brand's existing off-road SUV. That suggests a shared design language across the lineup. BYD has not detailed what sits underneath that sheet metal.

The China-market version will be called Dingyao, while Altior is reserved for international sales, including the planned Dubai launch. That dual naming mirrors how BYD has rolled out other Yangwang models, keeping a Chinese name at home and an international one for export markets.

Reports in China and Malaysia position the Altior against the Rolls-Royce Ghost, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, and Huawei and JAC's Maextro S800. That's a notably specific target for a brand that only moved into the ultra-luxury space around 2023 with the U8 and U9.

Dimensions And Expected Price

Reports place the Altior at 5,500 millimeters (217 inches) in length with a 3,350-millimeter (130 inches) wheelbase, figures that would make it slightly shorter than the standard-wheelbase Rolls-Royce Ghost. That's a significant footprint even by flagship-sedan standards.

Pricing reports point to approximately 2 million yuan, or about $300,000, though BYD has not confirmed a figure. If accurate, that number would place the Altior closer to extended Ghost variants and top-spec Maybach S-Class trims.

What do you think?

BYD has disclosed nothing official about the Altior's powertrain, battery chemistry, or total output, leaving open whether it will share hardware with the U8's hybrid system or debut something new entirely.

Final specifications, trim levels, and confirmed pricing are expected to follow the Dubai reveal.
