A man drives by a gruesome oil spill scene at a Walmart auto center and speculates about how it happened. Was it as simple as forgetting the oil drain plug?

Facebook creator Alex Morrison posted the video a week ago. It shows him driving through a Walmart parking lot when he sees a streak of oil leading to a pickup truck with the hood propped open.

“He just picked up the oil drain cap,” he says. “Y’all look at this. Get your oil changed over at Walmart. He got the hood popped on it. Forgot to put the dang plug back in. Turn, twist, and pour.”

In the caption, he concludes, “Good work ain’t cheap and cheap work ain’t good.”

Viewers React to the Walmart Oil Trail

In the comments section of the video, viewers reacted to the scene Morrison caught on tape.

“If your oil looked like that after they changed it they did you a favor,” wrote one person.

A second person questioned Morrison’s terminology. “Oil drain cap? Lol, sorry I had to say something,” they wrote. Another person replied, “He says funny stuff on purpose.”

One person guessed the real problem. “That’s a double gasket on the oil filter,” they wrote.

“I never understand how that happens cause it should be leaking in the shop as soon as you pour that oil in it,” another person said.

Someone else noted, “Good, fast, and cheap. You can pick two.”

What Caused This Walmart Oil Leak?

So what happened to cause this Walmart oil leak? Well, the vehicle’s oil drain plug is the bolt that holds the oil inside of the motor. It comes off during oil changes to allow the old oil to drain out and is then supposed to be replaced before the new oil goes in. Failure to do so can obviously result in the oil leaking out, the car overheating, and eventual engine failure if not promptly addressed.

As the person in the comments noted, there is also a chance that the leak was caused by a double gasket on the oil filter. That means the technician installed a new oil filter on top of the old one. That can create an issue where the oil can leak out, which can cause potentially catastrophic damage to the vehicle.

One car owner posted to the CarTalk forum back in 2018 to confess that they were doing an oil change and didn’t notice that the old filter stayed on the block. “I’ve then gone and screwed the new filter on, filled the engine with oil, and started it up,” the person wrote. “Because I was in the car, I couldn’t see the oil gushing out from the filter. After around 15 seconds, I heard some gargling noise and turned the engine off, got out, and saw the [puddle].”
