A man went viral on Facebook after spotting something almost too weird to be real — a dashboard light that looked suspiciously like a turtle.

“What does the Check Turtle light mean?” he asks in the text overlay of his clip, leaving viewers just as confused.

Content creator Wiktor Ivanovko (@wiktor.ivanovko.2025) quickly jumped in with a response, turning the mystery into comedy gold.

“That is actually indicating that you have driven the car so poorly, it has summoned the Ninja Turtles to come and beat the living crap out of you,” he jokes in his reel, which has already racked up more than 89,000 likes.

But for anyone actually worried about their car, the question still stands: What does it really mean?

What’s The Turtle Indicator?

The turtle light isn’t just a funny dashboard icon—it’s your car telling you something is wrong. According to Kelley Blue Book, its presence on your car’s dashboard means that your vehicle has gone into “limp mode,” which means it’s limiting power and speed to prevent severe damage.

In hybrid and electric vehicles, such as certain Mercedes-Benz models, the most common causes are a low battery charge or a problem with the high-voltage battery system. In gas powered and hybrid cars, it can be triggered by a faulty sensor, a bad turbocharger, or even something as simple as a clogged air filter. But it can also mean that, as Ivanovko suggests, you didn’t do your due diligence as a driver. The Mercedes website said that seeing this light means a driver “likely ignored the charge indicators over a period of time.”

That said, if this light shows up while you’re driving, pull over somewhere safe—and it doesn’t hurt to double check your owner’s manual to confirm what the turtle light means for your specific make and model. It’s also worth doing a quick check under the hood to see if a dirty air filter or disconnected hose could be the culprit.

If the light goes off and your car feels normal, you can carefully drive it to a mechanic. If it stays on or your car feels sluggish, it’s best to call roadside assistance and have it towed to a dealership or trusted shop. Ignoring it can make things worse. But don’t worry—it doesn’t mean the Ninja Turtles are coming after you.

Commenters Offer Their Own Theories

Viewers wasted no time jumping in with their own theories about what the turtle light meant—most of them jokes.

“Turtle is low-gear, the rabbit is hi-gear,” one commenter said.

“If you put it in sports mode, a rabbit light will appear,” said another.

“Means YOU’RE TOO SLOW,” a third added.

“Be careful, turtle crossing the road ahead,” a fourth viewer chimed in.

Some commenters tried to be helpful, offering real explanations instead of jokes.

“That is called limp mode,” one woman wrote. “Your car needs service immediately.”

“A turtle light is a dashboard warning icon that appears on certain hybrid and electric vehicles, such as Jeep Wrangler 4xe, Polestar 2, and Volvo hybrids, to indicate a significant reduction in power,” another said. “The vehicle will significantly lower speed and acceleration to allow the driver to reach a charging station or a repair shop.”

Others shared how it’s affected them while driving.

“Nissan EV. The battery [is] so low it only does 3mph to safely get off [the] road,” one said.

What do you think?

“My Chevy Sonic had limp mode, but it was an engine with a down arrow,” another wrote.
