'Can You Name This?:' Man Says That 1 Feature Is All You Need to See to Know the Make and Model of This ‘Classic Car’

A bizarre cupholder design was all some folks needed to see in a Facebook video to name the company that manufactured it. The Fast Lane Car Facebook account demonstrated which direction the automaker’s engineering team decided to go with the cupholders, and asked if people could guess the car based on the limited view he gave of its interior, as well as the cupholders in action.

Weird Cupholders

“Diabolical cupholders. Where the heck are the cupholders in this old car?” he asks at the top of the clip. He goes to the first place where one would suspect the beverage holders would be—the center console. So, he lifts it up, but the holders aren’t readily visible. That is, until he pulls the console up all the way.

This reveals that there are indeed four cupholders, but they’re encased on the underside of the center console’s lid. This might seem like a strange engineering choice unless someone is intending on fitting in a few upside-down Blizzards and outfitting the cubby with refrigeration capabilities.

However, the driver reveals that the center console’s top piece can be pulled out slightly and the cupholders reversed, turning a capacious armrest into a four-cup, stationary caddy. “You can pivot 180 degrees, fold back down, and there are your cupholders,” he says, showing off the motion to spin the holders and locking them into position. “You got four of them in this one little container,” he says.

Following this, he then highlights how the holders revert to armrest mode. The Facebook user presses his finger into the lock button to disengage the holders. Next, he flips the console’s top around and then presses it back into place. “And then go back to the console, push the sticky button, fold back—hides away, pretty crazy,” he says.

Which Car Is It?

Several commenters gave their opinion on which car would implement such a bespoke cupholder design. One person thought it was for sure a Range Rover due to the “piping on the seats.” Someone else echoed this same answer, to which The Fast Lane Car account replied: “nailed it.”

Range Rovers' cupholder designs have received their fair share of hate online. A bunch of folks in this RangeRovers.net forum discussion post decried Range Rover’s engineering team for implementing such a unique drink-holding solution.

“I don't know, but every time I look at that thing, I have to laugh. I wonder what engineer possibly thought that designing the most complicated swing-arm contraption in the world was a good idea, when a simple hole would have worked just fine for holding my drink,” one remarked.

Another lamented their difficulty in attempting to repair the cupholder mechanism, speculating that if folks simply removed the spring component, drivers could forcefully pull the cupholders out to use them in the event the original design fails.

Someone else said that the cupholders in their Range Rover “won’t stay closed” while they’re driving.

Bad Design

Folks offered up flaws in the cupholder design and different use-case scenarios in the comments section of the Facebook post. As one person remarked, getting anything from the center console once the cupholders were engaged would be problematic for those in the vehicle.

Another asked: “Where is my elbow supposed to go now?” The latter criticism was addressed by other users, however, who noted that the Range Rover’s front seats come with designated, folding armrests that provide additional comfort for riders.

“The seats themselves have fold down adjustable arm rests that are much better than the padded console lid. They’re just folded up out of the way for the video,” they pointed out.

Another took issue with the build quality of the center console itself. They referred to the audible squeaking of materials present in The Fast Lane Car’s video, citing that these noises made them sure of the fact that the vehicle was manufactured by the English car brand.

“Range Rover for sure you could tell by the cheap creaking plastic,” they penned.

What do you think?

And while the car did receive a lot of derision for its console, at least one user shared some applause for Range Rover’s comfortable chairs. “But the best quality full hide Connolly leather seats. Better than anything else pretty much,” they replied.
