20-Year-Old Woman Tries to Buy a Car That's Been on the Lot For 1 Year. Her Negotiation Skills Stop Salesman in His Tracks
"Girl, I'm bringing you with me to get a 2027 Range Rover."
A 20-year-old woman’s negotiation skills recently stunned a salesman trying to get her to buy a vehicle that’s been on the lot for a year. He simply wasn’t prepared to banter with her.
TikToker Lele (@liahhh341) posted a video about “how dealerships get you with ‘advertising’ pricing” earlier this week. In the video, Lele is at the dealership working on getting the best possible price on a car she knows has been sitting in the lot for at least a year.
The salesman asks her if $24,000 is acceptable. Lele responds that she’d prefer to spend closer to $19,000.
“When do you think you’re going to sell the car?” she asks. The salesman replies that the car is only still there because every time someone comes to look at it, they end up finding something they like better.
Lele, who wrote a book of advice for first-time car buyers, isn’t buying it and indicates she’s willing to walk away.
Lele then questions why no customer was approved for a loan on the vehicle in over a year. The salesman replies that some customers did qualify for a loan on the vehicle during that time, but the ones who did ultimately didn’t like the interest rate and didn’t take the deal.
The salesman then reveals that the listed price of the vehicle drops every week, in order “to be more aggressive on the advertisement.”
People were overwhelmingly impressed by Lele’s car buying negotiation skills.
“Girl, you a lawyer,” said one.
A second commented, “Girl I’m bringing you with me to get a 2027 Range Rover.”
A third person said, “SHOCKED when you said you were 20! You’re so knowledgeable and confident in what you’re speaking about.”
Another person asked, “Can you turn this into a hustle and go speak on behalf of others who don’t know how to negotiate?”
Several people said Lele is well on her way to wearing the salesman down.
“Tell him to call you when he’s tired of looking at that car on his lot and wants to give you your price,” one person said.
What Is a Dealership Advertised Price?
When you search for a car online, it’ll be advertised at a certain price point. That’s what you should pay the dealership before taxes, add-ons, and other fees.
The salesman in Lele’s TikTok appears to be saying that the dealership is lowering the price every week to attract more people to look at the vehicle in person.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, it seems like Lele did a good job by doing her homework before arriving at the dealership. Being able to comfortably discuss prices, discount offers, and financing terms is imperative to getting the best possible deal, per the FTC.
The biggest thing, like the commenters said, is being willing to walk away. The right deal will be there at the right time.
Motor1 reached out to Lele via TikTok comment and direct message for comment. We'll be sure to update this if she responds.
