New Mazda CX-5 previewed

Expected in 2026 with new hybrid powertrains, the third generation will have a look similar to that of the CX-60 and CX-80. Here it is in our rendering.

It is probably one of the most anticipated new Mazda models in the near future and is expected to arrive in 2026. We are talking about the CX-5, the new generation of which has already begun testing in the USA.

This is a necessary evolution for the Japanese SUV, which is being overhauled not only aesthetically, but also in terms of on-board technology and, most importantly, engines. We have gathered all the information and tried to imagine what the new CX-5 will look like with our exclusive render.

Inspired by the greats

The graphic reconstruction is based on spy photos of the first prototypes seen during testing in California. The impression is that the CX-5 will borrow styling cues from the larger models in the range, such as the CX-60 and CX-80. The front end is likely to be dominated by an even larger grille and slimmer LED headlights with boomerang-shaped interior graphics.

The dimensions should not grow excessively. We expect a length of about 4.58 m, a width of 1.85 m and a height of 1.69 m.

The sides remain massive and can accommodate wheels up to at least 20 inches, while at the rear the reference to the CX-60 and CX-80 is even more obvious. Indeed, horizontal clusters of lights converge on the Mazda logo at the centre of the tailgate.

We have not yet seen a glimpse of the interior, but we think the Japanese manufacturer will use a lot of new technology, while the upholstery could be inspired by that of the Mazda 6e.

Increasingly electrified

Under the bonnet of the CX-5 will be mild and full hybrid powertrains, but plug-in hybrid models are not ruled out. The electrified engines will be developed by the brand in collaboration with Panasonic and AESC, but we do not know whether they will be four-cylinder or six-cylinder, nor do we know the power outputs.

What do you think?

However, we do know that Mazda is working on a new family of four-cylinder combustion engines called Skyactiv-Z, which will be available in the first models in 2027. The CX-5 range could therefore be joined at a later date by one of these variants, most likely electrified to reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

As mentioned above, the launch is scheduled for 2026, but perhaps by the end of the year we could have the first 'official' clues about the model, including photos and teaser videos.
