Nio sold around 14 per cent more cars than Xpeng in 2024
Is Xpeng finally falling behind its rival of the same age?
The year 2024 has barely passed and the first sales figures for the full year are already available. Nio and Xpeng reported their results on 1 January. At 221,970, Nio delivered 39 per cent more vehicles than in the previous year. At Xpeng, the increase was almost as high at 34 per cent, but only 190,068 cars were handed over to customers.
Nio set new monthly and quarterly delivery records at the end of the year: 31,138 vehicles were delivered in December 2024, a year-on-year increase of 73 per cent. Among these approximately 31,000 cars, 10,528 were already from the new, "family-oriented" Onvo brand. 72,689 vehicles were delivered in the last quarter, an increase of 45 per cent. Cumulatively, Nio has delivered 671,564 vehicles since the group's launch in 2014.
Nio ET9 (2025): At 5.32 metres, the ET9 is even longer than the Mercedes EQS
The figures do not yet include the new Nio ET9, sales of which only began on "Nio Day" at the end of December. The giant crossover with a length of 5.32 metres, a 900-volt system and a 120-kWh battery, which costs the equivalent of approximately £83,000 including the battery, will not be delivered until March 2025. The Firefly, which will be launched in China from April, was also presented during the event. The car, which is apparently a compact SUV, is expected to arrive in Europe in the first half of 2025. The Onvo L60 should also be available here soon.
Nio Firefly: A new competitor to the VW ID.3?
Like Nio, Xpeng was founded in 2014 and is therefore often compared to its competitor. In 2021, Xpeng had narrowly beaten its rival in terms of deliveries. In 2024, however, Xpeng was left behind. With the aforementioned 190,068 units, Xpeng was around 32,000 cars or 14 per cent behind Nio. This seems to be consolidating a trend as Xpeng has been falling further and further behind since 2021:
Like Nio, Xpeng stepped on the throttle again in terms of sales at the end of the year: 36,695 cars were delivered in December, which was 82 per cent more than in December 2023. In the fourth quarter, 91,507 units were delivered (up 52 per cent).
Mona M03: mid-range saloon with 140 or 160 kW drive and LFP batteries up to 62 kWh
The brand's new beacon of hope in China is the Mona M03, a 4.78 metre long rival to the Tesla Model 3 with a large tailgate. In December, it surpassed the 10,000 deliveries per month mark for the fourth time in a row. Due to the high demand, production capacity has been repeatedly increased since the market launch at the end of August and is now expected to reach 50 vehicles per hour. So far, 50,000 units of the liftback saloon have been built.
The Xpeng P7+, which is also new, sold over 15,000 units in December. The successor to the Xpeng P7, which is only available in China, has an 800-volt system, as do the Xpeng G9 and G6 SUV models. The P7+ is also almost 17 cm longer and six centimetres higher than the P7.

Xpeng recently attracted attention with a van including a piggyback drone. The "mother ship" of this modular flying car is a three-axle vehicle with a range extender drive. The two-seater drone, which can be controlled manually or automatically, is transported in the boot under a large hatch. However, there are only renderings of the car and the drone so far. The following video shows how the whole thing works.
The bottom line
In the battle of the Chinese start-ups, the companies Xpeng and Nio, which are roughly the same age, are often compared. At the end of 2024, both groups stepped on the accelerator again in terms of sales. The result of the duel: Nio is 14 per cent ahead of Xpeng. In terms of technology, Xpeng is focusing on fast charging with its 800-volt architecture, while Nio is countering this with its battery swap system, but now also offers a fast-charging car in the form of the ET9. In terms of sales figures, the duel could be decided by the success of the new low-cost brands Firefly/Onvo and Mona.
