Toyota's new small off-roader could look like this
It is expected to debut later this month. But will it be sold globally?
The demise of the Suzuki Jimny Pro in Europe has turned our attention to its 'spiritual' replacement, the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ (it looks like that's what it will be called), widely and unofficially known as the mini Land Cruiser.
In the main image and just below you can see a virtual drawing of this affordable off-roader. Sure, it won't look exactly like this rendering, as it should be based aesthetically on the Compact Cruiser prototype (photo gallery below), but the overall design concept will be very similar.
Yes, because in addition to its small size and squarish physiognomy, Toyota's 4x4 has sturdy bodywork protection and high ground clearance, as well as very short overhangs, ideal for good approach and departure angles.
After all, you don't need much else to go off-roading and come out on top. Well, yes, a reduction gear and potentially two rigid axles (at least the rear one) would definitely help. Personally, we would remove the fancy side sills, as they affect the off-road capabilities.
On the mechanical side, there is a rumour that Toyota's new small SUV will be powered by the familiar 2.8-litre diesel engine found in the brand's larger 4x4s (Land Cruiser and Hilux), which now benefits from light hybridisation.
Aesthetically, we are very impressed by the retro front end, with circular headlamps and a black grille in between. At the rear, there are small taillights and what looks like a toolbox. A spare wheel would've been a nice touch, though. As a counterpoint, the roof rack gives extra versatility to carry luggage or a roof tent if you're going on a multi-day off-road adventure.
However, we've saved the potentially bad news for last, as there is talk that the small Japanese 4x4 will not be a global model, but will be sold exclusively in Asian and emerging markets. So, possibly, it won't land in Europe. We will have to wait and see what the Japanese company decides.
